Filing for judicial offices set to open

The first official event of the 2014 election season starts Monday, when candidates for judicial offices statewide begin filing for office.

The first to make appointments to file are two Supreme Court incumbents and both of Carson City’s district judges.

Supreme Court justices Kristina Pickering and Mark Gibbons will arrive at the Secretary of State’s Office at 8 a.m.

They will be followed by district judges Todd Russell and Jim Wilson at 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., respectively.

Supreme Court candidates must file with the Secretary of State’s office.

District judges in single-county districts such as Washoe and Clark file with their own county election officials.

Those in multi-county judicial districts such as Carson City file with the Secretary of State. Including District 1 (Carson City and Storey County), there are four multi-county districts. District 5 includes Esmeralda, Mineral and Nye counties; District 6 Humboldt, Lander and Pershing and District 7, Eureka, Lincoln and White Pine counties.

The only other judge to schedule an appointment to file so far is District Judge Kimberly Wanker, who serves in District 5 and will file in the Las Vegas Secretary of State’s Office.

All 88 district judges in the state’s 10 judicial districts are up for election at the same time in Nevada. Like members of the Supreme Court, they all serve six-year terms in office.

Justices of the peace candidates file with their county election officials.

Judicial candidate filings will run through 5 p.m. Jan. 17.
