MIDNEN — Leonna Mortimer, Katie McCullough and McKenna Kynett combined to ignite a 21-0 run to start the third quarter Saturday, and the Douglas girls basketball team went on to a 60-31 nonleague victory against Fallon.

Everything went right for the Tigers (11-4 overall, 4-0 Sierra League) during a four-and-a-half minute stretch in the third quarter when they extended their 24-19 halftime lead to 45-19.

“Our halftime talk was short and sweet,” Douglas coach Werner Christen said. “They had scored 8 or 10 points in the first half off second shots, so we figured if we could take care of rebounding and if we could get three stops right off the bat, we would be in good shape.”

The Tigers exceeded those expectations by converting eight layups without a miss. Mortimer had 10 points, McCullough had 6 points and 2 assists and Kynett dished out four assists during the outburst.

“That’s a very well coached team,” said Greenwave coach Anne Smith, whose club posted a 48-41 win at Truckee on Friday. “They made adjustments and we didn’t.

“In the first half, we took good shots offensively and did a better job of rebounding and getting second shots. But in the third quarter, we had too many turnovers.”

Fallon (4-7, 2-1) was led by Meg McCormick with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Hannah Lindsay also scored 6 points and Kayla Buckmaster 5.

Mortimer finished with a game-high 18 points while McCullough added 16 for the Tigers.

Fallon JV pulls out win

Zoey Swisher’s layup with 1:30 left was the difference for Fallon in its 34-32 win in a back-and-forth contest that saw three lead changes and four tie scores in the fourth quarter.

Genevieve Stodieck-Dreyer led Douglas (11-4) offensively with 9 points, 7 of which came in the final period. Kristyn Arvizo led all scorers for Fallon with 11 points and had a clutch rebound in the final minute. Swisher finished with 9 points, Paige Thorne 7 and Kalyn Huckaby had 6, including a putback that gave the Greenwave a 32-30 lead.

The game was a rematch from Dec. 27, when Fallon bested Douglas 36-26 during the State Farm Christmas Classic in Reno.
