Carson Sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Gonzales announced Wednesday he will challenge Ken Furlong in the race for sheriff in November.
He said he wants to restructure the department to put more officers on patrol and use money to better protect Carson City and its residents.
“It’s important that we have the best people protecting our families and children in Carson City,” he said in a statement. “I will make the safety of our community my top priority if elected to Carson City Sheriff.”
Gonzales charged that the department under its current administration “is not evolving due to insular decision making and a lack of outside input and perspective.”
He said he also will raise training standards for deputies including reserve deputies as well as hiring and promotion standards I the department.
Gonzales promised to create an Office of Professional Standards in the department and said he has already identified more than $600,000 that, if the budget is reorganized, will enable putting more deputies on the street.
He has been with the department more than 10 years.
Furlong has already announced he is seeking another term in office
Gonzales earned his college degree from Western Nevada College in 2008 and received his Advanced POST certificate in 2009. Gonzales is married and has three young children.
He has created a website at www.danielforsheriff.com.
