SPARKS — Going up against some of the better schools in the Division I-A, the Greenwave wrestling team finished third out of 20 teams at the annual James McCollum Sparks Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.
Fallon produced three champions, including Anthony Sabatino (126 pounds), Trae Workman (145) and Sam Goings (138), who was also voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches. Goings outscored his opponents 65-5 during the two-day tournament.
“Those kids pretty much dominated the tournament but it was a good weekend for mat time and improving different moves they have been having trouble (with),” Fallon assistant coach Trevor de Braga said. “The younger guys who haven’t had much mat time got to wrestle quite a bit against kids around the same caliber.”
Dakota Schelling (170) battled through the consolation bracket to finish third, while Terry White (106) fell short in his last bout but still placed fourth. Tucker Stritenberger (106) finished sixth after losing to his teammate, White, in the consolation round.
Lowry’s JV squad won the tournament by edging Elko, 173.5-172.5, as each team had one champion, two second-place, three third-place and one fourth-place finishers. Fallon came in third with 151 points and tied with Douglas, which took sixth, with the most individual champions for the tournament.
“It was a good tournament for our younger guys,” de Braga added.
Fallon continues its tournament schedule with a two-day event in Lassen, Calif., this weekend.
