Winning is becoming an old habit for a pair of Greenwave grapplers.
Sam Goings and Trae Workman lead the Fallon wrestling team into today’s and Saturday’s “Border War” in Lassen, Calif.
The change of scenery, Fallon coach Mitch Overlie said, is advantageous for his club before the Wave hit the home stretch of the regular season. In addition, two of his top wrestlers have another chance to display their skills at another tough tournament, although some payback may be in store.
The Wave is coming off a third-place showing at Sparks.
“Trae lost to a kid (from Lassen) at Sierra Nevada,” Overlie said. “Hopefully it happens and is different than what happened in Nevada.”
The “Border War” features numerous schools from Nevada and California close to state lines.
Goings made mincemeat of his completion last week in Sparks, as the sophomore outscored his opponents 65-5 en route to earning the Most Outstanding Wrestler honor.
Workman, meanwhile, has bullied his way through his opposition only losing at the Reno Tournament of Champions and Sierra Nevada Classic.
“They’ve wrestled a lot of big tournaments in their lives already,” Overlie said. “This is a good tournament because it has people they haven’t seen. They have an opportunity to work on a lot of different techniques.”
Goings and Workman’s standings at the TOC were not indicative of their abilities, Overlie said. The long-time coach added Workman has the talent to place in the top 5 at TOC.
Goings, meanwhile, has the skills but must follow through his moves, Overlie said. His losses have come after being caught with a counter.
Nevertheless, the two grapplers aim to lock up a title this weekend to propel themselves forward.
“He just has to make sure to stick his moves and keep moving,” Overlie said of Goings.
As for the rest of the club, Overlie has high expectations for Clay Amezquita and Anthony Sabatino. The duo both wrestle at 126 pounds and have shown improvement throughout the season.
“They just have to continue to get stronger,” Overlie said.
