TRUTH ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING

Tom Riggins started his latest column talking about the ship that got stuck in the Antarctic, using this incident to poke more fun at the idea of global warming. Conservatives think it is hilarious that parts of the United States are having extremely cold weather. Just watch Fox if you don’t believe that. Since these conservatives don’t believe in anything they haven’t personally experienced, most of them seem to forget that the earth has a southern hemisphere, and weather happens down there too. Australia has had record heat for awhile now, and it is causing a lot of trouble.

Riggins mocked President Obama’s claim that excessively high temperatures are harming public health. In Queensland, Australia, temperatures have reached 135 degrees Fahrenheit, which are the highest ever.

This year is the hottest on record. The heat has killed tens of thousands of animals, including 100,000 bats which literally fell out of the sky, dead, due to the heat.

This has created a huge public health hazard with all the dead bodies. The Australian government is having a hard time disposing of the tens of thousands of dead animals. Some Australians say the stench is unbearable. The dry conditions also make the fire hazard extremely high, another public health danger.

Modern conservatives have always been extremely self-centered. They think that if they are not hungry, then no one is. If they have a job, everyone does, or can. Now they seem to think that if they aren’t personally seeing hot weather, no one is, and global warming just isn’t true. It would be nice if they asked some of the people in Australia if they believe in global warming, but that would require them to step outside their own little circle, and that might be too much work.

HARMLESS BILL MAY NOT BE HARMLESS

Senators Reid and Heller have written a draft bill titled Nevada Sagebrush Landscape and Economic Development Act of 2013; a harmless enough name. But below the surface lie new steps in the federal government’s march to take more control over our land and concentrate power in Washington. The draft bill claims to be an effort to protect habitat for the sage grouse.

Does anyone remember the spotted owl, snail darter, delta smelt, desert tortoise? All convenient species for attempts by liberal elements to deny the public rights to whatever they were against at the time. In my estimation, the best way to increase sage grouse habitat would be to decrease the number of federal agents, roaming the land and causing mischief.

The Reid-Heller bill would drastically increase “wilderness areas” and Churchill would be one of the counties hardest hit. That classification allows federal agencies to deny use of the land to ranchers, farmers, miners and the general public seeking recreational activities.

Harry Reid is known for shady things like this to help his family and friends and donors to his campaigns. But what is Heller doing? What might Harry have promised him?

The Churchill County Commissioners will be discussing the draft bill today at its regular meeting. Let’s hope they will make an effort to protect our rights. The federal government has left Nevada only 13 percent of its area to administer and decide who has what rights to its use. I think it’s time for us to say enough.

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE

You can curse the darkness, or light a candle.

You can complain about politics and politicians, or you can participate in defining the issues and getting them enacted; selecting your candidates and getting them elected.

The key word is PARTICIPATE.

The Carson City Republican Central Committee gives you several opportunities to participate in whatever way you like. Just remember that nothing gets done unless people get down to doing it.

Stop cursing the darkness. Light a candle. In these strange times it is not an exaggeration to say we must light many candles to keep the flame of freedom from being extinguished. Fight to preserve the freedom you inherited, fight for the freedom you want to pass on to your kids.

Remember Reagan’s words.

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same.”

You may wonder why we must fight for freedom. Well, it takes no effort to fall into apathy and let others make your choices for you. All you have to do is ... nothing.
