Fernley’s Callahan signs with WNC

Although she plays softball in a rural community 40 miles outside of Reno, Kelsie Callahan hasn’t been a secret to the Western Nevada College coaching staff.

“I’ve watched her the last couple of years, and she has a really big stick,” WNC coach Leah Wentworth said of the Fernley Vaqueros’ senior infielder.

Callahan has given Fernley coach Diane Chapin flexibility not only when she’s in the batter’s box but also in the field.

“She is one of our most versatile players,” Chapin said. “She has played third, first and outfield. She has good power at the plate but also can execute bunts and slaps effectively when needed.”

Last season, Callahan stroked 17 extra-base hits, including six triples as the Vaqueros captured the Division I-A state championship — 14-13 over Fallon — its fourth since 2007. Her three-run homer sparked a seven-run uprising that lifted Fernley to a 14-13 victory over Churchill County in the title game.

“Numerous times she has come up with clutch hits and defensive plays,” Chapin said.

There is no secret behind Callahan’s athletic success.

“Kelsie is a player you can count on being there every practice and game and also the one putting in extra work on the side,” Chapin said.

The 5-foot-11 Callahan also swatted 10 doubles while producing a .309 batting average as a junior. Her consistency and power at the plate are qualities that Wentworth believes can provide immediate dividends for the Wildcats.

“I see her making an offensive contribution right away,” Wentworth said. “She really has a strong arm, and I can see her playing somewhere on the infield corners.”

As a sophomore, Callahan hit .354 with four doubles, three triples and four homers. She led her team in homers and was third with 28 RBI.

Callahan also was selected as a Division I-A all-league second-team middle blocker for the volleyball team during her senior season.

Carson pitcher Kaitlyn Jimmy, Reed infielder Britni Greninger and Bishop Manogue infielder Katie Gonzales also signed with WNC on Wednesday.
