Top deputy running for clerk-recorder

Longtime chief deputy Sue Merriwether is running for the office of Carson City clerk-recorder, seeking to replace the retiring Alan Glover.

Merriwether has worked for the clerk-recorder’s office since 1997. Before that, she worked 17 years in the Secretary of State’s Office handling elections issues, including development of the state’s Motor-Voter program and overseeing candidate filings. She also worked with state archives officials to develop a system of classifying and retaining historical elections documents.

“Sue knows this place better than anyone,” Glover said. “I know I couldn’t be leaving the office in better hands.”

In the clerk-recorder’s elections office, Merriwether worked with Glover to implement electronic voting, converting election processes to comply with state and federal laws, according to a news release. She is now working to launch the electronic poll books system to expedite voting and enable driver’s license check-in.

“I know I’ll have some big shoes to fill with Alan leaving,” she said. “But I’ve worked at this job for almost two decades, and I know what I’m getting into. My experience will make the job easier.”
