Senator Square: Congrats to newly crowned Winterfest king and queen

It was an especially fun week for the Winterfest candidates this past week. On Thursday night, the underclassmen royalty were crowned prince and princess at a special event held at the ice-skating rink here in Carson City. Congratulations to freshmen Jace Keema and Chandler Blueberg; sophomores Christian Kivi and Haley Gray; and juniors Kyle Kunz and Abbey Dudley.

On Friday at halftime of the basketball game, seniors Austin Shaffer and Kaeli Biggin were crowned king and queen.

BAND CONCERT/FUNDRAISER

Join Carson High School’s jazz band and the Mile High Jazz Band at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Center for the annual benefit concert for Carson High band programs. Tickets are available from CHS band students or at Play Your Own Music in the Carson Mall, or at milehighjazz.com.

CHS CHOIR TO HOST MADRIGAL DINNER

Chamber and concert choir students will host the annual Madrigal Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14-15 in Senator Square. This event features a theatrical performance performed by the chamber choir members of an original play written by Dylan Shirey for his senior project.

Dinner will be prepared by Carson High culinary art students and served by concert choir members in Renaissance-themed costumes. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 from any choir member until Friday. After that date, tickets will cost $25. CHS choir groups are directed by Andrew Sonnemaker. WE THE PEOPLE ADVANCE TO STATE

Twenty students from the advanced-placement We the People class, instructed by Angila Golik, participated in a district competition in December at UNR. The class finished in the top four of 12 teams, which advanced them to the state competition Saturday at the Legislature.

Eight schools will compete in a simulated congressional hearing that will test their knowledge and application of the Constitution. The winner of the state event will advance to the national competition in April. Along with Carson High School, Reno, Incline and Reed high schools will represent the northern division of the state, where they will face the southern schools of Clark, Bishop Gorman, Basic and Canyon Springs high schools.

The competition is judged by justices, attorneys, professors and other educators from around the state. We the People, the Citizen and the Constitution, is a curriculum program created by the Center for Civic Education and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s senior spotlight is on Isabella Favero. Bella has a 4.08 grade-point average and is taking honors and advanced- placement courses as well as concert choir and two culinary arts classes.

Last week, Bella was the chef of the day for the culinary restaurant. She prepared fresh pita bread with hummus, a delicious lamb salad and a delightful mango ice cream with pineapple sauce. Bella is very involved in the school and her church. She is a part of the honor choir, Skills USA, the golf team and the National Honor Society. She does many service activities through school and church.

Bella intends to attend BYU in the fall, studying nutrition and nursing. She plans to become a post-op nurse. Bella is looking forward to Heart month in February, as she had heart surgery seven years ago. Carson High School is proud of the contributions Bella has made throughout the school and community and wish her all the best.
