Natives & Newcomers meeting is July 10

Brenda Mothershead of the Department of Aging and Disability will talk about elder abuse at the next Carson City Natives & Newcomers meeting at 11:15 a.m. July 10 at Grandma Hattie’s Restaurant, 2811 S. Carson St. The presentation and lunch will be followed by a short business meeting.

Natives & Newcomers supports scholarships to Western Nevada College nursing students and Carson High School students. It supports local charities and provides braille playing cards to the visually impaired.

Donations sought for Elks fundraising sale

Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge, 1227 Kimmerling Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos, accepts donations from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays until Sept. 1 for its annual flea market fundraiser.

Only clean items that work and are of good quality will be accepted. Cathode ray tube TVs will not be accepted.

Sheriff’s Office seeks volunteers

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office seeks volunteers for its Volunteers in Partnership with the Sheriff program.

Volunteers will help with the office’s Patrol Division, front counter and jail visiting program.

Carson Valley Desert Brushes meets

Centennial celebration of Nevada battleship set

A ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the battleship USS Nevada commissioning in Carson City will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 11 at the Capitol Building.

Officials will re-dedicate a plaque at the USS Nevada Memorial. A reception will follow in the Old Assembly Chambers in the Nevada State Capitol.

Education Initiative topic of July 12 event

Manuel “Manny” Martinez, a co-founder of NVJOBS PAC, will be featured at Lyon County Republican Central Committee’s meeting at 10 a.m. July 12 at Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A.

NVJOBS PAC was formed to help defeat the Education Initiative, or Margin Tax.

Martinez attended Rutgers University and had a 33-year career in communications. He was the first Latino to be inducted into the National Association of Minorities in Communications Hall of Fame.

Annual food drive benefits FISH

Grocery Outlet, 1831 N. Carson St., is holding its fourth annual Independence from Hunger food drive through July to benefit Friends in Service Helping.

Marked food items that FISH has requested can be purchased and placed in a collection bin located at the front of the store. Cash donations can be made upon checkout; all donations go directly to the nonprofit pantry, which also runs three thrift stores and a clinic and shelter.

Registration opens for charity golf tournament

Thunder Canyon Ladies Golf Club will hold its charity golf tournament to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada on July 20. Registration, breakfast and raffle ticket sales will begin at 7:30 a.m.; the tournament will start at 9 a.m.

The four person team scramble tournament includes a continental breakfast, golf cart and tournament play, driving range access and lunch after the tournament.

Douglas library presents science programs

The Douglas County Public Library will host a family program presented by Mad Science at 6:30 p.m. July 15 in the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda Ave. in Minden, and from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. July 15 at the Lake Tahoe branch, 233 Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove.

The program encourages scientific learning in children, who will watch chemistry and physics experiments including booming balloons, bungee jumping “pets,” and a rainbow created by a rainbow maker. All ages are welcome.

Fernley Republican Women meet July 15

Sherry Dilley and Alice Clark, leaders of the Nevada Federation of Republican Women, will be featured at Fernley Republican Women’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 15 at Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 6 p.m. for snacks and socialization.

Sherry Dilley, NvFRW parliamentarian, will talk about a new project titled WOMEN = RESULTS, providing education on increasing membership and getting women elected to political office.

Alice Clark, NvFRW leadership chair, will talk about the differences between Democratic and Republican philosophies using examples from current news issues along with excerpts from Charles Krauthammer’s book, “Things That Matter.”

Donations are also encouraged for Fernley Republican Women’s Caring for America/Adopt-a-Soldier program, which collects non-perishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank, along with donations of funds and care items for soldiers. Items sought for soldiers include: single serving food and personal care items and cards and letters from home. Women’s club hosts annual golf tournament

The women’s club of Eagle Valley Golf Course will hold its annual Invitational Golf Tournament with the theme “Under the Sea” on July 30. A shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m.

The tournament, whose format is 2-Gal Best Ball, includes a water chipping contest, sea creature putting contest and a par-3 starfish hole.

Entry costs $75 and includes green fees, continental breakfast, Hawaiian lunch buffet, prize fund, raffle, best dressed team, pictures and more.

Elks annual Summerfest and carnival planned

The Tahoe/Douglas Elks will hold its annual Summerfest and carnival, offering rides, games and food, from 5 to 11 p.m. July 23-25 and from noon to 11 p.m. July 26 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

Pre-sale tickets, which are transferred to all-day wrist bands at the carnival, are available for $15 each until 3 p.m. July 23 at the Chamber of Commerce, Accolades Trophies, Especially for You, Les Schwab Tires, Main Street Barbers, Pizza Barn, La Hacienda Del Sazon Mexican Restaurant, and Tahoe/Douglas Elks.

This year’s event will feature a craft fair on Friday and Saturday. The Elks booths will have hamburgers, hot dogs, cheesesteak sandwiches, French fries, ice cream, sodas and water. There will also be a beer wagon with draught beer, wine and margaritas.

Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop set

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop from 6 to 10 p.m. July 26 in Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Vintage 1950s and 60s dance music will be played; costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests with door prizes.

Volunteers sought for Meals of Hope event

Sierra Lutheran High School will host its inaugural Meals of Hope meal packing event to benefit underprivileged families in Carson Valley from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 5.

Volunteers from local organizations, churches, and civic groups will gather to assemble 100,000 meals to deliver to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, an organization that operates through contributions made by Carson Valley residents, local service groups, churches, businesses and local food merchants.
