Folk duo performs at BAC

Musicians Tom May and Chris Kennedy bring their duo act to the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall on Friday, July 25.

The 7:30 p.m. performance by the folk singers and songwriters will feature work they have honed together in occasional appearances and on a CD over the past two decades. May said it’s a fourth performance trip to Carson City, two times previously at the BAC and the other at Western Nevada College. He said the act is a fun time for audience and performers alike.

“There’s just a lot of humor involved,” May said in a telephone interview.

“Were both really looking forward to being back in Carson City,” he said. “We’ve got some new songs, we’re delighted to have this new CD out and we’re looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.”

May and Kennedy, who released their CD last August, also have separate careers. May, who lives in the northwest, said he has released 15 albums. He’s a broadcaster and author as well as a performer. Kennedy, a community college communications instructor in Wyoming, has four albums of mostly original songs. They are about trains, wild places and changes in the west.

May is the host of the long-running River City Folk, a music and interview radio show he began in Omaha, Neb., his former home, and continues in the northwest. His folk music ranges across the genre’s spectrum. In 2008, he also published a book called “Promoting Your Music; The Lovin’ of the Game.”

While in Carson City, May will conduct a free music business workshop at the BAC’s Maizie Jesse Harris Black Box Theatre. It’s from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, in the Black Box venue at 449 W. King St. in the BAC complex. Kennedy also has a free event Saturday morning of July 26 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, 2180 S. Carson St. A collector of railroad songs, he will perform several such numbers at the museum depot from 10 to 11 a.m.
