The Union shaft in Virginia City was examined by Joe McDonald and three others through the drain tunnel. They proceeded a short distance when McDonald uttered a cry of distress. Foreman Jones and others rushed to their assistance. A strong smell of gas told what had happened. McDonald was the first to be taken out of the mine, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The other three survived with the aid of physicians who had been summoned. Joe McDonald leaves a young wife and child in this city.
