James Sorrentino, the 101-year-old veteran who was robbed at his Carson City home on Memorial Day, was presented with $1,000 on Friday by a Western Nevada College’s Student Veterans group.
Sorrentino said the group of about 10 veterans even had a huge paper check made up for the occasion.
A WNC spokesman said the money was raised in a recent Poker Run the group conducted.
“They thanked me for my service in the armed services,” he said adding it was a nice gesture from the group.
Sorrentino served from 1941-1945, finishing World War II in the newly created U.S. Air Force.
He was robbed Memorial Day by two men who broke in through his garage and, at first, demanded to know where the “safe” was. There was no safe.
The two held Sorrentino and one of his caregivers at gunpoint while they searched the house, eventually leaving with only about $30 worth of stolen goods.
“Nobody was hurt,” said Sorrentino of the robbery.
Two men have been arrested in the case and one, Jordan Burkhart, 24, pled guilty to robbery and senior victim enhancement last Monday.
The other defendant, Robbie Hernandez, 27, is scheduled to enter a plea this Tuesday before District Judge James Wilson.
