WNC summer term starts June 9

More than 40 courses, including writing, communications, art, music, theater, and accounting math, are offered during Western Nevada College’s summer term, which begins June 9. The eight-week courses meet through Aug. 2, unless otherwise noted. A sampling of courses include:

Business 107: Business Speech Communications — Students focus on their speech communication skills. The class will cover effective listening and feedback methods, voice improvement, group and team interaction, how to create messages for positive and negative audiences, as well as preparation and presentation of an oral report.

Geology 114: Geology of Lava Beds National Monument — Students are provided an experiential field trip of the Lava Beds National Monument in northeastern California, focusing on interpretation of modern and ancient geologic events. Instruction includes the basics of rock identification, land form analysis and interpretation.

Music 129: Piano Lower Division — Instructor John Shipley examines performance and analysis of keyboard literature from various eras. Instruction includes an introduction to keyboard technique and an application of basic music theory to piano literature. An additional course fee of $200 includes 14 half-hour private lessons.

Theater 105: Introduction to Acting I — Students will learn the fundamentals of stage acting with special emphasis on improvisation. Instructor Jeff Whitt will introduce the principles of the performing environment. Speech, vocal skills and theatrical movement will be emphasized.

Businesses affected by drought eligible for loans

Small, non-farm businesses in Carson City, Lyon, Storey and Washoe counties are eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration.

The loans cover economic losses caused from the drought that began on April 1. Businesses dependent on farms and ranches that have suffered agricultural production losses, including small, non-farm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private, nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster loans of up to $2 million. Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible.

Desert Brushes group meets June 12

Carson Valley Desert Brushes will practice brush strokes at its meeting at 10 a.m. June 12 at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, 1400 Stephanie Way in Minden.

Painters of all levels, and those who would like to learn to paint, are welcome to attend.

Wellness event for female veterans planned

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services will hold an information event about wellness, education and employment opportunities for female veterans on June 14 at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Topics the event covers include the Combat Paper Project, stress management, how to dress for success and computers. Renown will cater lunch.

Up to 80 veterans can attend; registration is required by calling Pam Roberts at 775-688-1653 or sending an email to robertsp@veterans.nv.gov.

ESL In-Home Program

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada seeks a volunteer accountant/CPA to reconcile bank and checkbooks and serve on its board of directors, which meets three times a year in Carson City.

The nonprofit works to teach English to non-English speaking people at no cost.

Girls State tea planned for June 13

The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 4 will host a Girls State tea from 5 to 7 p.m. June 13 at the Governor’s Mansion.

Proceeds benefit Girls State delegate scholarships from Carson and Douglas high schools. The delegates have been interviewed and selected based on leadership qualities both in school and in the community.

The event offers a silent auction and raffle. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. Attendees are asked to RSVP by calling Chris Ritger at 775-782-9791.
