The Internal Revenue Service awarded nonprofit status to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, an all-volunteer group that was formed in 2011 to preserve the prison to educate generations of Nevada students and residents.
The first donation to the society under its designation as a public charity was made last week by Carson City Assemblyman Pete Livermore, whose legislation in 2013 set the stage for planning by state agencies on the 152-year-old prison’s future as a historic site and museum, as well as possible uses for other buildings on the property.
The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, NSPPS was chartered by the state in 2012 and applied to the IRS for nonprofit designation under section 501(c)(3) in December that year. It received confirmation this month from the IRS.
Nonprofit status means contributions to the NSPPS are tax-deductible, although donors should check with their financial adviser. A copy of the IRS confirmation letter is available on request.
Information on membership in NSPPS is available at www.nspps.org, along with more history on the prison and access to a monthly newsletter. Individual memberships start at $25 a year ($20 for seniors), and larger donations are accepted. Send payment to “NSPPS,” P.O. Box 1991, Carson City 89702.
