A $600,000 Brownfields Assessment grant from the federal Environmental Production Agency will help clean up and redevelopment efforts in Lyon and Churchill counties, Nevada development officials stated.
The Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA), which serves Carson City and nearby counties, said the grant allows the development authority to evaluate and catalog sites in the two counties to the east of Carson City if the sites are under-utilized as a result of previous environmental contamination. Each assessment will provide a road map for future redevelopment of the sites for businesses.
“The money from the grant will be used to assess sites in Churchill and Lyon counties, including but not limited to Yerington, Fernley and Fallon,” an NNDA news release stated. “NNDA will distribute the funds to professional environmental contractors to perform the assessment.”
The development authority, headquartered in Carson City, said the main goal is economic development and job creation. The grant was among 171 awarded this year across the nation and just one of two announced in Nevada, the development authority stated. It’s being awarded over a two-year period.
