Supervisors to canvass vote Tuesday

A special meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday to canvass the vote from the June 10 primary election. The meeting will take place in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

Fundraiser for the Silverada Little League

Js’ Old Town Bistro will host a spaghetti feed from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday to benefit the Dayton’s Silverada Little League. Douglas group hosts genealogy experts July 3

Jean Wilcox Hibben, a board-certified genealogist who was lead researcher for last year’s PBS program “Genealogy Roadshow” and Lynn H. “Butch” Hibben will talk about genealogy at Douglas County Genealogy Group’s meeting at 1 p.m. July 3 at Carson Valley Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Jean is a California-based national speaker, family historian and vice president of the Genealogy Speakers Guild. The Hibbens’ program is geared for those interested in and fascinated by genealogy and family history research.

Donations sought for St. Gall’s rummage sale

St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville will accept donation items for its annual rummage sale beginning July 7.

Donations are collected in June and July. They can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at the church, located at 1343 Centerville Lane.

The rummage sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 1 and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2.

Free course about mental illness offered

The National Alliance on Mental Illness Western Nevada will offer a 12-week NAMI Family-to-Family course for family members and partners of adults with mental illness from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 24 to July 31 at Calvary Chapel, 1635 Clearview Drive.

NAMI-trained individuals who have experienced supporting an adult family member with mental illness in his or her recovery will teach the free course, which offers current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, PTSD and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders.

The courses will also focus on medications, side effects, and strategies for medication adherence; research about biology of brain disorders and treatments; and information about understanding the experience of a person with mental illness. There will be workshops about problem solving, listening, and communication techniques. Strategies for coping and handling crises and relapse will be presented.

Grant awarded to language & literacy nonprofit

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada a $4,000 grant to support adult and family English language and literacy.

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $92 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than five million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada serves five counties in Northern Nevada with English language and literacy programs for low-income, non-English-speaking adults. The nonprofit is a member of the National Literacy Council. It serves over 400 learners annually.

ROVER program for vets visits Silver Springs June 25

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services Veterans Outreach ROVER program will visit the Silver Springs Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 25 so veterans and their family members can meet with a Veterans Service Officer to learn about benefits and services.

Veterans are asked to bring a copy of their DD-214 discharge document; current VA paperwork; medical information and banking account information. If claims involve dependents, bring birth certificates, current and prior marriage certificates, divorce decrees and Social Security numbers.
