140 years ago

We mentioned in our Sunday issue a party of four, a quartette of anglers, had gone up to the Lake. This piscatorial expedition embraced DeNeuf and Wenle of Fox’s, Driesbach and George Fryer. We stated the others would probably cut up Fryer for bait. We made a mistake. Judging from the results it was Driesbach who got fished with. Abe, the leader, never got a bite. Fryer looks as if he had been barely rescued from the stake he is so sunburnt.

130 years ago

The people in all parts of the state are complaining of the weather. They have had a surfeit of rain ... hundreds of hay hands on the Humboldt and tributaries say there is no hope of cutting hay on lands that are flooded now before August. For once in the history of Nevada, people are complaining of too much water. — Silver State.

100 years ago

A two-reel feature, “Pickles, Art and Sauerkraut,” a rip-roaring comedy, will keep all in tears of laughter. “His Fireman’s Conscience,” a strong railroad drama, is also featured with “His Excellency,” a picture produced in Mexico, as another strong reel at the Grand tonight.

70 years ago

Joye Watt of Winnemucca was awarded the first prize in the Nevada state essay contest sponsored by the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Johnny Laxalt of Carson placed second.

50 years ago

The 1964 death toll on Nevada highways continued to climb during the weekend. The most recent accident, a head-on collision near Battle Mountain, raised the total to 81, 11 ahead of last year’s record pace.

30 years ago
