An industry well worth the mentioning is the manufacture of willow baskets in Washoe Valley. An old German, whose exact whereabouts we can’t know, utilizes the native willow to the purposes of his trade, and he makes some very workmanlike and strong baskets.

130 years ago

On Sunday afternoon, Evan Williams, superintendent of the Mexican Mill, fell off the Eureka trestle works at Empire and was severely injured. Williams found it necessary to use a plank to stand on while he detached ore from an ore car. The plank broke with his weight and he fell 10 feet, breaking his arm.

100 years ago

Taking Indians home. A party of 30 pupils of the Indian school departed for their homes on express Sunday evening. Superintendent Mortsolf accompanied those who live in Winnemucca and Elko. George Simerole chaperoned a number to Laws, Bishop, Big Pine and other points in California. The students are to spend vacation with relatives.

One of Gov. Carville’s neckties, the brown, tan and green striped one, has been sent to Walla Walla, Wash., to be auctioned as part of the fifth war loan campaign.

50 years ago

A Carson City girl was chosen best dressed in Centennial attire at the Girls State inaugural banquet held last night at the University of Nevada. Kathy Davis was presented with a Nevada medallion following her selection as grand prize winner.

30 years ago

The Douglas County Commission voted Thursday to house a historic 1927 Seagrave Fire Engine in the Douglas Engine Company’s Minden station. The decision comes after much controversy with the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department over possession of the historic engine.
