Marsh receives NAC Silver Beaver Award

RENO — This year’s Annual Recognition Dinner at the Atlantis Casino honored eight volunteers in the Nevada Area Council (NAC) for their outstanding service to the Boy Scouts of America and their community.

The Silver Beaver Award is the highest distinction a council can give their volunteers. This prestigious award represents thousands of volunteer hours and countless dollars dedicated to the youth of America.

Karl Marsh serves as District Advancement Committee Chairman for the Pony Express District in Fallon. Marsh also teaches Japanese and biology at Churchill County High School.

Every summer for the past two years he and his family have given up their summer vacation so Marsh can take on the role of Camp Program Director at the Boy Scout’s Camp Fleischmann.

Also honored was Robert Colbert of Elko, who serves in the Overland District on the eastern side of the NAC. Earning the rank of Eagle at age 16 and currently serving as Scoutmaster of one of the strongest troops in the Overland District, Colbert has been involved in Scouting virtually all his life.

Lavonne Applewhite started off as a Cub Scout Parent in 2007 in Sparks. After completing Scoutmaster Training, she and her husband started Troop 800. From Tiger, to Den, to Webelos Leader, Applewhite has been an extremely active scouting volunteer in the Northstar District.

Mike Rowe has been a part of Scouting since 1965. Living in Minden, Rowe currently serves as the Chairman of the Pinenut District. His scouting tenure has not only consisted of time invested, but substantial financial contributions.

Barbara Stewart has spent the last seven years in Reno volunteering in nearly every scouting position possible. Committee Chairman, Cub Master, Unit Commissioner, Assistant Crew Advisor and Scout Leader Training Instructor name just a few.

Monte Haines has been an honored and recognized scouter for 55 years. He currently lives in Carson City and serves on the Sierra District Eagle Board of Reviews, and as Unit Commissioner.

Gene Furr has served as a unit volunteer in the Reno Area for a number of years. He’s held positions of Den Leader, Cubmaster, Committee Member and Councilor for numerous Merit Badge programs.

Jim Rogers has played an integral role in the national Boy Scout organization, as well as being active locally with his own three sons’ scouting activities. He was honored nationally as a Distinguished Eagle Scout in 2002 and currently serves as the Nevada Area Council’s President.
