Fallon senior Elena Murray won the 100-meter hurdle race during Saturday's league meet at the Edward Arciniega Complex.

It was the theme for the Fallon track teams as the Greenwave opened the season on Saturday at the Edward Arciniega Complex.
Hosting Dayton and Fernley, the Fallon boys team won the meet with 87 points followed by Dayton (65) and Fernley (32). Fernley’s girls team won its meet with a score of 80, followed by Fallon (68) and Dayton (33).
The meet, though, was the first opportunity for coaches Steve Heck and Paul Orong to evaluate their teams.
“We just want to get the kids who are new a chance to compete, and for the veterans to see where they are,” Heck said. “I think we accomplished that. It was a low key, fun event.”
Many veterans such as Nathan Heck and Elena Murray picked up where they left from last season. The rookies, meanwhile, were able to get their feet wet in the season’s first meet.
“We just wanted to get our nervousness out,” Orong said. “It’s always fun to see their faces when they do well. We did well.”
Boys sprinters Jake Ernst (11.69 seconds) and Charles Fulks (11.99) placed first and second, respectively, in 100-meters, while LeAnn Mounce took second (14.57) for the girls.
Ernst followed his 100 with a solid 23.71 in the 200. Heck tied for second with Dallon Mendoza of Dayton (23.94) and Allison Shirley was also second (29.98).
Heck continued to shine with wins in the pole vault (13 feet) and 110 hurdles (15.73). Jordan Schultz finalized the hurdles sweep in his first-ever race in the 300 (45.51).
“The kids were competitive,” Steve Heck said.
Murray, who won a pair of state titles last season, dominated with wins in the 100 hurdles (17.44), long (15-4.5) and triple jumps (33-5).
Patricia Leggett cruised to win the girls 400 (1:01.50), while Dakota Schelling (57.36) won the boys race.
“The biggest stud was Leggett,” Orong said. “She’s a beast and will be really good.”
Tristen Thomson (2:09.90) and Nathan Schank (2:15.30) placed second and third, respectively, in 800. Schank also took second in 1,600 (5:19.88).
“Tristen looked great, and Nathan was real strong,” Steve Heck said.
Emily Coleman had a solid debut in the field for the Lady Wave. She placed second in shot put (31-7) and discus (91-8). Freshman T.J. Mauga showed his potential with a second-place finish in the discus (126-9), while Justin Hatfield also took second in shot put (45-8.5).
“With the veterans, where they left off last year, they started (this season),” Orong said.
Beau Marshall added to the spoils with victories in the long (19-2.5) and triple jumps (41-6.5).
“T.J. Mauga did very well and had some good throws,” Steve Heck added.
