Lyon County Republican

Spring Basket celebration
It’s time for the Spring Basket Auction sponsored by the Churchill Library Association.
Create a basket on the theme of your choice and deliver to the library (553 Maine St.) through April 7.
It will be displayed in the library with a card identifying you as the donor. All baskets will be sold in a silent auction ending at 3 p.m. on April 10.

Teddy Bear activities

Request for proposals
Soroptimist International of Fallon has $11,800 available through the Margaret Oser Endowment Fund, administered through the Community Foundation of Western Nevada.
The funds must be used to benefit women and/or girls and will be granted to government entities, religious institutions, schools, and/or 501(c)3 organizations.
Applications must be postmarked by April 11 and can be obtained by calling Terri Pereira at 775-426-9786.

Churchill County Schools is accepting applications for kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year Children must be five years old on or before September 30, 2014 to be eligible.

Jefferson-Jackson dinner
The annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner being held April 10 at the Fallon Convention Center and hosted by the Churchill County Democrats. The no-host social begins at 6 p.m, with the buffet-style dinner service beginning at 7 p.m..
The main speaker will be Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall, candidate for Nevada Secretary of State. Also speakingis Lucy Flores, candidate for lieutenant governor; candidates for office will also be introduced.

AAUW film festival
The American Association of University Women will hold its annual film festival and dessert extravaganza on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Churchill County High School Auditorium.
“Quartet” is a film about the fictional Beecham House for retired musicians. Movie historian Howard Rosenberg will discuss the film and he promises to have great juicy stories about the actors. The donation of $20 includes movie, drink and dessert buffet. All proceeds go to local scholarships. Soroptimist International of Fallon will present the 14th annual Home, Garden and Recreation Show on April 12-13 at the Fallon Convention Center.

Common Core presentations
Common Core State Standards are now being implemented in Nevada’s K-12 schools. Legislatures in 33 states have passed or are considering bills to delay or outright repeal the standards.
John Eppolito of Incline Village will give a power point presentation titled “The Truth About Common Core” at 6 p.m. on April 7 at the Convention Center.
Tax Day presentation
Tax Day is approaching and many of us are still fed up with how our government is operating.
Come to Millennium Park, Maine and Williams, noon-3 p.m. on April 6 and voice your concerns. There will be speakers on such issues as the 2nd Amendment, BLM/Sage Grouse, Agenda 21 and Common Core, as well as comments by candidates for public office.

Attorneys and specialists will offer their services for free on May 13 from 12-3 p.m. at the County Commissioners Chambers, 155 N. Taylor St.
They will answer questions on family law, wills and probate. Walk-ins only, no appointments. Also mark your calendar for future “Ask A Lawyer” dates: July 22, Sept. 23 and Nov. 25. These sessions are being sponsored by the Nevada Legal Service and the Churchill Community Coalition.

The Community Service Thrift Shop at 169 E. Center Street is open 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each weekday. We are a non-profit organization run by a group of dedicated community volunteers. We do not have room for bicycles, beds, couches or large televisions. We receive donations at the back door from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays.

Fallon chapter, Nevada Alumni Association
The Fallon chapter of the University of Nevada Alumni Association is having its monthly meeting on April 2 at 6 p.m. at Pizza Barn.
All alums and friends of the university are invited to attend. Plans are underway to schedule a bus in May to see one of Sarah Parsons final softball games in a Nevada uniform. Parsons is a Greenwave graduate who was a multi-sport star.

Hearts of Gold Quilters
The Hearts of Gold Quilters meets every Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way. All quilters are welcome.
We are a group of 40 busy quilters who meet weekly to make donation quilts, as well as working on our own projects.
An average of 80 quilts per year are donated to our community.

WNC Fallon will be offering free HSE classes for students interested in attaining their high school equivalence diploma. Registration for these classes will be held the first Monday and Tuesday of each month and is on going. You must attend both days of registration.
