Cancer Warriors sponsor raffle ride fundraiser

The Cancer Warriors for Central Nevada are holding a Raffle Ride for Scott Wilson and Christina Santiago, both local cancer patients, on Saturday.

Scott is a loved teacher at Churchill County High School who has been a public educator for 32 years and is currently teaching biology. He has four children and five grandchildren. Scott is married to Kerri Angel, an eighth-grade science teacher at Churchill County Middle School. While having a CAT scan on his left kidney for a kidney stone, a substantial (7 cm) mass was discovered in Scott’s right kidney. On Feb. 3, the mass was removed, as well as an adrenal gland, and found to be a stage II Renal Cell Carcinoma. Scott has just returned to teaching.

Christina is currently fighting breast cancer; it is her second bout with cancer (her first being cervical cancer). She carries a mutant hormonal gene called BRCA along with HER2, another hereditary mutant hormonal condition that affects breast tissue, mutates the normal cells, turns them into cancerous cells, becomes very aggressive in nature and spreads quickly. She was diagnosed at the end of October and had a double mastectomy in November. Christina is a local realtor.

The ride begins at Tu Bruthers between 9-10 a.m. with stops at Brand Used Works, Daily Grind, Choice Wireless, Just Country Friends and Harmon Junction, and ends at Lattin Farms for lunch at about 12:30 p.m. At lunch there will be a concert by Sliverwing and the raffle drawing. It costs $20 to participate in the ride; with that fee, the participant will receive a cancer awareness bracelet, a raffle ticket at each location and lunch provided by Leanza’s Bakery.

Each stop will have additional raffle tickets for sale ($1 each or 6 for $5). Each location will have a raffle prize, and the tickets received at that location will go towards that prize. This way participants can improve their odds of winning the prize they like the most. All vehicles and motor clubs are welcome.

If someone wants to help but not participate in the ride portion, they are more than welcome to listen to the concert by Silverwing, purchase lunch for $7, and buy raffle tickets at Lattin Farms.
