Curtain Call

This marks the end for Sara Parsons.

The 2010 Churchill County High School grad dons the home white jersey one last time as her career comes to a close for the University of Nevada softball program.

Parsons and the Wolf Pack opened the final three-game series of the season Thursday against Fresno State. The clubs meet at 4 p.m. today and noon Saturday to cap the regular season.

“I’m just really excited,” Parsons said. “I’m just not trying to think about it being my last weekend.”

The Fallon chapter of the University of Nevada Alumni Association will bus to Hixson Park on Saturday. Tickets are still available for the bus for $35 and includes transportation, game ticket and refreshments.

“That’s really cool,” Parsons said of the bus trip.

Nevada, 25-24 overall and 7-14 in the Mountain West, is not expected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Parsons’ season has been good, but not great. Coming off a pair of monster seasons in her sophomore and junior years, Parsons struggled early to find her rhythm.

She is hitting .273 with two home runs, five doubles, 20 RBIs and 32 runs scored in 49 games this season. In the outfield, Parsons has only committed three errors and tallied four assists.

Despite the Pack’s up and down season and this weekend being the final chapter in her softball career, Parsons said she is taking the same approach as always.

“It’s the same as always,” she said. “Just go out and get my job done. Taking care of the little things will take care of the big things.”

Parsons landed with the Pack after she received several offers to play elsewhere. But the lure of playing for her hometown school was too much to overcome.

Her career started a bit slow, but Parsons’ sophomore season saw the Fallon star reach new heights. Playing in the Western Athletic Conference, she was named first-team All-WAC and cemented herself as one of the Pack’s best players.

Nevada transitioned to the Mountain West last year, and Parsons didn’t skip a beat as she hit better than .300 as the Pack led the conference in most offensive categories.

“It’s been absolutely amazing,” she said of playing for Nevada. “Nevada is very close to my heart and I’ve had a blast.”
