RENO — Douglas High’s softball team split two games on the first day of the Northern Division I regional tournament at Bishop Manogue High School.
The Tigers opened the day with a 5-4 loss to Galena and then came back to eliminate McQueen, 10-5, in a loser’s bracket contest.
In the loss to Galena, the Grizzlies scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to wipe out a 2-1 deficit and take a 4-2 lead. Caitlin Laycox went the distance in the circle for the Grizzlies.
Makayla Shaver led the Tigers with three hits.
In the win over McQueen, Kelly Sonneman drove in four runs while Allison Meyer and Leonna Mortimer collected two hits and two RBI apiece. Kaitlyn Bowman pitched 4.2 innings to get the win, while Kali Sargent got the save.
Douglas scored five in the second and four in the fifth to take control of the game.
Dayton opens 1A softball
Makayla Shadle leads the Dayton Dust Devils into the 1A softball playoffs at Todd Field at South Tahoe Middle School.
Dayton plays Fernley, the regular-season champ today at 10 a.m. All four playoff teams will be in action twice today. There will be second-round games at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
Shadle compiled an 18-7 record in 27 games this year. She struck out 281 hitters in 140 innings and allowed just 57 hit and 13 earned runs.
SWIMMING
Regionals at Carson
The top swimmers in the region will compete at the Division I and Division 1A swimming championships at the Carson Aquatic Center today and Saturday.
Swimming competition starts at 3 p.m. today and 10 a.m. on Saturday. The top three finishers in each event plus top three relay finishers advance to the state meet scheduled for May 24 in Las Vegas.

Damonte ousts Tigers
RENO — Tyler Oscarson pitched a five-hitter and struck out four, and Andy Calingaert collected three hits and drove in three runs to lead Damonte Ranch to a 4-0 playoff win over Douglas Thursday at Peccole Park.
The Mustangs will play Spanish Springs, which eliminated Bishop Manogue, 5-1, today at Peccole Park.
