Carson’s Kipling enjoys big day in pool

Dagen Kipling and Tallon Rauch each qualified for finals in two events to lead Carson High’s boys squad at the Northern Division I swimming championships at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The finals get under way today at 9 a.m. with the top three finishers in each division advancing to the finals next Saturday in Las Vegas.

Kipling is seeded No. 1 in the 200 IM with a 2:03.41 and he is No. 1 in the 100 breast in 1:02.66. Rauch enters the finals No. 4 in the 100 back at 58.54 and is No. 7 in the 50 free at 23.85. Casey Garrett is No. 6 in the 100 fly at 1:00.75, Peter Garrett is No. 6 in the 50 free at 23.49 and Drew Briggeman clocked a 56.18 good for No. 7 in the 100 free.

It was a tough day in the pool for the CHS girls, as only Christy Krahn and Eli Everest advanced in individual events.

Krahn was fifth in the 100 free at 59.37. She was ninth, one spot out of the money, in the 100 breast. Eli Everest is No. 3 in the 500 free at 5:29.13.

SOFTBALL

Douglas girls win twice

RENO — Douglas High’s softball team stayed alive in the Division I regionals with wins over Bishop Manogue and Galena Friday afternoon at Bishop Manogue.

Douglas knocked off Manogue, 12-0, and then turned around to beat Galena, 5-1. The Tigers play Spanish Springs today at 10 a.m. with the winner moving on to the finals against Reed, a 9-7 winner over Spanish Springs.

Kali Sargent pitched for Douglas in the win over Galena. She struck out four, walked one and allowed six hits to get the win over Caitlin Laycox.

Corry Diaz and Leonna Mortimer combined for five hits and two RBI,

Mortimer drove in a run in the first. Mortimer doubled home Diaz in the third. The Tigers scored two in the third and two in the fifth.

Aubrey Slocum singled home Galena’s only run in the fifth inning.

No information was available on the Manogue game.

Dayton girls eliminated

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Dayton Dust Devils’ season is over after close losses to Fernley and Lowry Friday at Todd Field.

Dayton opened the day with a 5-4 loss to top-ranked Lowry, and after a two-hour break, came back and dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 2 Lowry.

Dayton ends the season with a 15-11 record.

In the opener, Dayton took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Mallory Dickenson and Nichole Vienneau hit back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0. Kalee Alexander added a run-scoring single for a 2-0 lead.

The game stayed that way until the fifth when Fernley scored five times on two Dayton errors, two illegal pitches called against Makayla Shadle and two singles.

None of the runs against Shadle were earned, and she allowed four hits and struck out 10 batters.

Dickenson led Dayton with two hits.

In the loss to Lowry, the Buckaroos scored two in the second and two more in the third against Shadle, who went six innings, fanned 10 and allowed three hits. She blanked Lowry over the last four innings, but the damage had been done.

Dayton scored once in the third and once in the fifth. Shadle, who led Dayton with two hits, had the Dust Devils’ only RBI. Hannah Stevenson, Dickenson and Shalia Powell had a hit apiece.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

UNLV rips Wolf Pack

LAS VEGAS — UNLV scored eight runs in the first inning, all off starter Barry Timko, en route to a 17-9 win over the Nevada Wolf Pack in a Mountain West Conference game Friday night.

The teams finish the three-game series today. The Mountain West Conference tournament starts Tuesday at UNLV.

Austin Byler’s two-run homer in the first led to a 3-0 Nevada lead, but UNLV roared back. Timko faced 10 batters in the first, allowing eight runs (seven earned) and six hits before departing after retiring just two batters.

Nevada cut the lead to 8-4 in the second, but UNLV added two in the fourth to go ahead 10-4.
