Senator Square: Countdown to graduation is on

I think countdown began some 170 plus days ago for the graduating seniors, but here we are with only eight days of school left. The seniors are feeling especially proud of completing their year-long senior projects this past Monday that ended with a presentation to a panel of judges from the community and school. According to Jason Macy, senior English teacher and Senior Project Chairman, this is the first class of seniors who had perfect attendance the day of presentations.

Congratulations to the Class of 2014. Your efforts are commendable. Thank you to all the community members that took time out of their schedules to participate in this activity.

SAFE GRAD

The Carson High School PTSA Safe Grad night is fast approaching and the committee members are reaching out to the community for volunteers for the overnight event. The Safe Grad will be May 31-June 1 at the Carson City Community Center.

Volunteers will help with registration, bag check, food, games and activities, door monitors, raffles, and set-up and clean-up. Volunteers are needed badly for the 2:30-5:30 a.m. shift. If you are able to assist, please email jslocum@gncu.net ASAP with your name and phone number.

MASH CELEBRATES

On Tuesday, MASH students, teachers and staff gathered in Senator Square to celebrate the students’ successes in the program this year. MASH is run through a 21st Century Grant designed to support students through after-school tutoring, enrichment and credit recovery. This year, more than 100 students completed the required 30 days of attendance in the program.

Students were recognized for completion of the program as well as for outstanding attendance of 55 or more days at MASH. Brian Sandoval, a freshman at CHS, participated more than 88 days. The 17 teachers, six paraprofessionals, 15 peer-tutors, and many community partners were honored as well.

Thanks to everyone for making this program such a success. Also, a special thanks to Bridget Gordon at CHS for coordinating all of the events and programs associated with the MASH program on our site.

TEACHER WINS AWARD

Adrienne Evans, oceanography teacher at CHS, was awarded the Diver of the Month Award for May by the High Desert Divers-Dive club. Members of the club say that Ms. Evans is an “inspiration to ocean lovers in our community.” Congratulations Ms. Evans!

ENGINEER CLASS SHOWCASE

Come see what CHS students have been designing, drafting and building all year. The showcase will be 5-6 p.m. May 22 in the CHS library. Built items include: wooden watch band, card holders, lanterns, tie rack, biplane, bridges and more.

CHS ALUMNI NEWS

Hayley Canfield and Mikayla Story made it onto the UNR Cheer Team for the 2014-2015 season. Both are graduates of the CHS class of 2013. Mikayla is also the head varsity cheer coach for Carson High School. Congratulations ladies, way to represent CHS.

Mackena Bell, CHS graduate of the Class of 2008 and current NASCAR driver for Revolution Racing, is teaming up with the American Lung Association in the launch of “Lung Force.” Lung Force is a national health education movement with a mission to unite women to stand together for lung health and against lung cancer.

“Being one of the few women racecar drivers, I feel a responsibility to call attention to important issues, like women’s lung health. Most women don’t consider lung cancer to be a serious health threat and are not aware of the alarming facts,” said Bell.

Bell is in her fifth season with Revolution Racing and is driving the No. 21 car sponsored by Special Smiles Pediatric Dentistry in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Congratulations Mackena for your honorable work both on and off the track.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week the spotlight is on Rachel Streeter. Rachel has kept a rigorous class load, taking many advanced-placement and honors courses. Despite her challenging course load, she has managed to maintain a 4.40 weighted grade-point average. Rachel is a volunteer at Carson Tahoe Hospital. She plans on attending Western Oregon University. She hopes to major in nursing and go on to become a nurse practitioner in the field of oncology.
