Babe Ruth commish fighting back

A year-long rumor circulating around youth baseball is causing quite a stir.

According to Eugene Daily, Nevada state commissioner for Babe Ruth Baseball, individuals associated with Little League are asserting the Babe Ruth league will no longer be active in Nevada.

In addition, Daily said the vocal opponents of Babe Ruth said Little League would take over their fields.

Daily, though, said the rumor is not true and the Little League district commissioner said he has no control over what local leagues put out.

“I can personally assure you that this is not the case,” Daily said. “We have eight Babe Ruth leagues up and running this season here in Nevada, and this season we have been doing interleague play between the leagues in Reno, Sparks and Fallon.”

He contacted the Little League district commissioner, who did not take action against the rumors.

“Needless to say when I got off the phone with him, I was in awe at how he didn’t seem to care about how the local Little Leagues were conducting themselves under the Little League organization name,” Daily said. “So we as a whole are taking a stand to show that we are still here and plan on being here for a very long time.”

His response to the attack, though, is a media campaign to bring attention to the Babe Ruth leagues.

A week-long interleague tournament scheduled for Tuesday through May 31 at the Golden Eagle Sports Complex in Sparks is the starting point.

“Our Babe Ruth leagues are hoping to be able to get some coverage of the games throughout the week, so we can let the communities know that Babe Ruth is still alive and well and thriving,” Daily added.
