Memorial Day observances are scheduled for both Fallon and Fernley as local officials, politicians and military organizations pay their respects to the men and women who served in the nation’s military.
Fallon is unique in that it conducts three ceremonies.
At 11 a.m. at the county cemetery, the county’s military organizations will conduct a wreath ceremony and offer remarks about the importance of serving the nation. The ceremony changes venue for a Memorial Day ceremony at noon at the Fallon Paiute Shoshone cemetery. The day concludes with a solemn remembrance at 1 p.m. at The Gardens Cemetery, 9249 Austin Highway.
The Veterans of Churchill County need volunteers to place flags on veterans’ gravesites on Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Churchill County Cemetery and then pick up the flags on Monday afternoon at 5 p.m.
The Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley will also conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Keynote speaker is Retired Maj. Gen. Cindy Kirkland, who served as the state’s adjutant general for the Nevada National Guard from 2005-2009.
Sen. Dean Heller and Congressman Mark Amodei are also scheduled to attend the ceremony.
