Douglas student honored in Washington, D.C.

Spencer Flanders, a 15-year-old sophomore at Douglas High School, was named the West Region Youth Advocate of the Year by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids for his leadership in the fight against tobacco at a gala in the nation’s capital on May 15 along with a national winner, three other U.S. regional winners and a group winner.

Flanders has been involved in fighting tobacco since the sixth grade through his local group, Students Taking on Prevention. He was part of a team that encouraged smoke-free playgrounds by installing signs that read, “Young Lungs at Work, Please Don’t Smoke Here.” He is currently leading a campaign to encourage local businesses to institute smoke-free entrances.

Minden woman graduates from Clemson University

Samantha Rene Johnson of Minden graduated from Clemson University with a Master of Education in counselor education.

Johnson was among more than 3,200 students who received degrees from President James P. Clements, who presided over his first graduation ceremony at Clemson and who was inaugurated in three stages at the morning, afternoon and evening ceremonies.

Carson man earns degree at Creighton University

Raymond Graber of Carson City was awarded a Doctor of Dental Science degree from the School of Dentistry during Creighton University’s commencement ceremony on May 17 at the CenturyLink Center Omaha. About 1,600 degrees were conferred during the spring commencement.

Krupp graduates from Methodist University

Kendra Krupp was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C.

Krupp, who is the daughter of Larry and Carrie Krupp of Carson City, majored in environmental and occupational management and minored in legal studies. She concentrated in regulatory compliance.
