Truckee man arrested on suspicion of murder in mother’s death

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A Truckee man is being held without bail on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of his mother, officials have confirmed.

David Charles Jenkins, 61, was arrested at Truckee Police Department headquarters late Tuesday, Chief Adam McGill said Wednesday morning.

The body of Jenkins’ mother, Nellie D. Mulligan, 88, was found at her residence shortly after 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at Sierra Village Apartments at 10109 Martis Valley Road, McGill said. The two lived together and appear to be the apartment’s lone occupants.

“It appears she died of unknown causes, and the case is under investigation,” McGill said.

According to a follow-up statement from the department, Mulligan’s “physical state and living conditions were poor and suggested that there had been some level of neglect.”

“There was no obvious cause of death and the level of neglect was suspected to be a factor,” officials said.

An autopsy is pending.

Jenkins was later booked at Nevada County’s Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City. Along with second-degree murder, he also faces two felony charges of cruelty to elders with great bodily injury.

Police stated Jenkins and Mulligan had lived in the Truckee area for roughly one year, and Mulligan was believed to have been from Florida prior to moving here.

“It does not appear that Ms. Mulligan was under the care of a physician or home hospice,” officers said.
