Whitt headed to prestigious Cape Cod

Carson High graduate Adam Whitt has been invited to play for the Cotuit Kettleers of the prestigious Cape Cod League.

Whitt compiled a 5-5 record with a 3.71 ERA in 30 relief appearances for the Nevada Wolf Pack this season. He and former CHS teammate Colby Blueberg formed one of the best 1-2 punches out of the bullpen in the Mountain West.

In 53.1 innings, Whitt struck out 54 batters and allowed 47 hits. Teams hit .233 against him. He is the second local player in recent memory to go to Cape Cod, following in the footsteps of Matt Bowman, who starred at Dayton and then went to UNR.

As a Giants fan, I’m overjoyed by their success thus far.

However, I’m concerned about the second base position. Marco Scutaro was unable to start the season, and may not be able to play until August after undergoing a procedure on May 18.

Right now Brandon Hicks and Ehire Adrianza are holding down the fort., but neither is producing much at the offensive end. Hicks has hit eight homers, but he strikes out too much and is hitting .184. Adrianza is at .152. I just don’t see a National League team being able to go the distance with that kind of offensive production. An American League team could afford that because of the designated hitter.

I’d love to see general manager Brian Sabean make a deal to strengthen that position.

What about Tim Lincecum for Chase Utley? Would the Phillies go for that? I think that would be a win-win for both teams.

One thing I’ve wondered about ever since I arrived in Northern Nevada is why the area golf courses haven’t banded together and put on a four-round tournament spanning back-to-back weekends.

I mean you have Silver Oak, Eagle Valley’s two courses, Genoa Lake’s two courses and Dayton Valley. That gives you some pretty decent tracks to rotate around.

I could say the same thing about Reno. All those courses, but no city championship? If a city the size of Albuquerque can do it, why can’t Reno?

Why can’t the Carson City area?

What about a family twosome tournament? San Francisco’s 9-hole Golden Gate Park par-3 course hosted one for years and years.

It started out as a father and son event, and eventually was changed to a family twosome event to be more politically correct. It was a huge success. My father and I played in it four times. We never got past the first round of match play, but we had a lot of fun.

Carson girls basketball coach Nathan Tolbert said that Savannah Smith, who missed most of the season with a knee injury, played an outstanding game Wednesday at the fifth annual LSP All-Star game for graduating seniors.

“She was able to get to the basket whenever she wanted,” Tolbert said. “She looked great.”

Smith said her surgically repaired knee is about 90 percent.

“My knee feels a lot better,” Smith said earlier this week.

“It does get a little sore sometimes. I’ve been going full speed for a while now, and I just played my last tournament for Jam On It (club team in Reno).”

Smith has decided to attend Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., in the fall.

“I’ve been down there a couple of times and done some open gyms with them,” Smith said.

“I really love it down there.”
