Jason Woodbury wins Carson City District Attorney race

Jason Woodbury will replace Neil Rombardo as Carson City District Attorney.

When Rombardo decided not to run for re-election to a third term, Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger filed for the post.

The final vote count was 7,622 for Woodbury and 6,676 for Krueger.

Woodbury essentially ran his race against Rombardo and the current operation of the DA’s office, which he said Krueger would continue.

He said Krueger has been No. 2 in the office for two years, “long enough to give you an idea what an office under his leadership would look like.”

He did so with a war chest roughly seven times that of Krueger’s. While Krueger raised $11,624 in the race, Woodbury raised $74,628.

Woodbury said he’s looking forward to getting to work.

He said that includes, “putting a team together and talking to staff that is there and transitioning into the future of the DA’s office.”

He credited Krueger with running “a nice strong race.”

“I think I’m a better candidate and am going to serve the office better,” he said.

Woodbury criticized Rombardo’s operation in an earlier interview saying some 39 people have turned over in the 21-person office since 2007 and that his view is the office “has not been a healthy place to work in recent years.”

Woodbury has practiced law 16 years, beginning with the Carson DA’s office from 1999-2003. Since then he has been in private practice — primarily business litigation.

“I think the judgment you get from representing big business, small business and individuals out in private practice is incredibly valuable in making the decisions you have to make as district attorney,” he said.
