RENO — Authorities were investigating but releasing few details Wednesday after a law officer shot and killed a man on the edge on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno.
Reno police temporarily closed down a stretch of Virginia Street just north of downtown shortly after 4 p.m. as detectives gathered evidence at the crime scene, officer Tim Broadway said.
Investigators were questioning several UNR students who witnessed an altercation that preceded the fatal shooting.
Multiple officers from multiple law enforcement agencies were on the scene but the initial reports indicated only one was involved directly with the dead man, Broadway said.
“There was some kind of threat, that’s why shots were fired,” he told reporters. “At no point were there any civilians in danger.”
UNR officials said the investigation at the corner of Virginia and College Street has not affected any classes, campus events or other operations.
