Wishing Tree applications

Applications for the 2014 Wishing Tree Program will be available through Oct. 17.

The Wishing Tree Program provides gifts during the holiday season for Churchill County youth 0 to 17 years old who meet income and residency requirements. Applications may be picked up at Churchill County Social Services, 485 W. B St., Suite 105, during normal business hours. The Wishing Tree Program is possible due to the volunteer efforts of the Independent Telecommunications Pioneer Association and kind community donations.

Fallon Sea Cadets dinner

Come and join us for a fun filled night on Oct. 4 with great food, raffle and auction prizes. The proceeds from this event to support the Fallon Sea Cadets will go to uniforms, transportation and for cadets who need financial assistance.

The event will be held at the Reno Elks Lodge, 597 Kummel Lane. Doors open at 5 p.m., and dinner is at 6 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door.

The Fallon Sea Cadets Division is a Northern Nevada program that serves all communities located throughout Northern Nevada. The program provides American youth a drug and alcohol free environment to foster their leadership abilities, broaden their horizons through hands-on training and guide them to becoming mature adults.

Amateur radio

The Amateur Radio of Churchill County (ARCC) invites all current amateur (Ham) radio operators or anyone interested in amateur radio to its monthly meeting, which is on the first Tuesday (Oct. 7, 5:30 p.m.) of the month at the Churchill County Administrative Complex, conference room 102, 155 N. Taylor St.

The ARCC also invites anyone to its monthly breakfast (Oct. 19 at 8 a.m.) at the Eagles Hall. Cost is $7.

Amateur radio operators are invited to attend a weekly NET on Sundays at 6 p.m. at repeater 146.97 with a PL of 103.5 Hz The purpose of this net is to exchange information relating to general amateur radio topics.

Bereavement class

XL Hospice is offering a six-week bereavement class beginning Oct. 15. The class meets Wednesdays at noon at the XL Hospice Office at 570 S. Maine St. Call the office (775-423-9511) to register. No cost.

FRIENDS collecting winter garments

FRIENDS Family Resource Center is collecting clean, gently used coats, jackets scarves, gloves, mittens and beanies as part of the Coat Caper community service project. Coats of all shapes and sizes are welcome.

The program distributes reusable coats, free of charge, directly to local children and adults.

Bring your clean, gently used coats, jackets, scarves, gloves, mittens and beanies to Fallon City Hall, CCHS, CCMS, Lahontan Elementary, E.C. Best, Numa Elementary, Northside Early Learning Center or Oasis Academy Charter School from Oct. 1-10.All donated coats will be given to the FRIENDS FRC for distribution on Oct. 22 at Northside Early Learning Center cafeteria at 340 Venturacci Lane from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Sesquicentennial time capsule

The Churchill County Museum Association is excited to play a part in the local celebration of the 150th birthday of the State of Nevada.

Through the Mayor’s NV150 Commission, a “time capsule” is going to be placed within a permanent outdoor display at the southeast corner of the Churchill County Museum Building. This public ceremony is scheduled to happen very near to the date of Nevada’s birthday, Oct. 31.

You are invited to participate in this community event by donating a item to be placed within the time capsule that you feel best represents the City of Fallon, Churchill County, or Nevada such as a letter, a document, a photo, a sound recording, a video, a small book or any other item that would not exceed a measurement of 6”x6”x6.”

Fundraiser for cancer

Pjammin for Cancer is a way for businesses and schools to show support by paying a minimum of $1 per participant in exchange for the ability to wear pajamas to school or work for a day.

While this is a fun way to raise money, it’s also a symbolic way to show support for the children who have no choice about whether or not they have to be in their pajamas all the time.

All money raised will be donated toward the programs and services of Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Donations can also be made online at http://www.gofundme.com/djz7ak

Students can wear their pajamas to school for $1 donation.

Oct. 9 is pajama day for CCHS, CCMS, Lahontan and Northside schools.

High school equivalency classes

There will be a change in the registration dates for the next high school equivalency classes at WNC Fallon.

Instead for registration on Oct. 13 and 14, registration will be on Sept. 29 and 30. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until noon both days at the WNC campus in Pinon Hall, room 204.

Training workshop

A training-of-trainers workshop is designed to educate adults who work with teens and teen peer leaders/educators about healthy dating relationships and the prevention of relationship abuse.

4-H Find Out Night

Churchill County 4-H is hosting its annual 4-H Find Out Night on Oct. 6 from 6-8 p.m.

Current 4-H members and leaders will be on hand to share information about local club activities and events. Join us at the multi-purpose building located at 225 Sheckler Road to see all that 4-H has to offer.

Churchill Democrats

The Churchill County Democrats will hold their regular monthly meeting on Oct. 9 at the Churchill County Administration Complex in Room 136. Please note, this is a change of place.

MOPS meeting

Are you the Mother of a Preschooler, birth to 5 yrs.? Do you need a break a couple of times a month?

We hope at our meetings moms will find encouragement, support, relevant teaching, and opportunities to develop relationships with other women who are in the same stage of life. Volunteers needed for ChArts Store

The Churchill Arts Council (CAC) is sponsored a training for qualified volunteers to work in the ChArts Store @ the Oats Park Art Center.

Those interested must be at least 18 years of age and attend this training session. While volunteers may be able to see performances when they are working at no charge, they must be completely available to work before, during and after performances. Duties will include assisting patrons with purchases, logistics, and other activities as required.

Senior brunch

Fernley Estates will be hosting a senior brunch (age 50+) on Oct 8 from 9-11 a.m. Proceeds to benefit the Northern Nevada Veterans Coalition.

Community Service Thrift Shop

The Community Service Thrift Shop at 169 E. Center Street is open 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each weekday.

We are a non-profit organization run by a group of dedicated community volunteers. We do not have room for bicycles, beds, couches or large televisions. We receive donations at the back door from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays.

We have received lots of material (priced at $1 a yard) and lots of Lace trim’ priced as marked, that is for sale.

Sept. 29-Oct. 3; Storewide half-price sale “all merchandise is on sale.”

The proceeds from our sales support families with emergency help, with a written referral from Churchill County Social Services, and also for the scholarship programs for graduating CCHS students and local nursing students.

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 99 S. Nevada St., 775-423-6446. Donations are accepted Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

American Legion

Breast cancer fundraiser

The American Legion Post 16 at 90 N. Ada St., will be raising money for breast cancer for the month of October. The post will be holding a coin drive, as well as having raffles for varies donated items. There will be additional specials going on for the whole month. Come and check us out. Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office.

The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St., or visit www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division.
