Prep roundup: Carson volleyball sweeps, takes over second

RENO — Carson High’s volleyball team took over sole possession of second place with a sweep of Galena, 27-25, 25-16. 25-14 Tuesday night.

The win was Carson’s seventh straight and moved the Senators to 8-1. Manogue, Carson’s next opponent on Thursday (6 p.m.) in Carson, is undefeated.

“I’m very pleased,” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “Despite the slow start, the girls played well. We’re executing really well. The girls are getting better at it (the new offense).”

Maw thought his team might have been looking ahead to Thursday’s match-up.

“A little bit,” Maw said. “Galena has always been a hurdle for us. We got in rhythm, and we started rolling through the games once we got going.”

Juliana Anderson led Carson with nine kills and Jaycie Roberts added eight with two aces. Maddie Jergensen had six kills, while Kylie Riske had seven blocks and two kills. Setter Natalie Anderson had five kills and 14 assists and Makenzie Tucker contributed eight kills.

Dayton tops Truckee

Dayton (5-4 in league) avenged a first round loss to Truckee with a 15-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 win.

“We probably had one of our best defensive games,” Dayton coach Mike Edmiston said.

Cheyanne Strong posted a double double with 11 digs, 11 kills and one ace, Shalia Powell had 24 assists, two kills, one block and three digs, Kaylee Turner had five blocks and six kills, Kallie Strong had three blocks and one ace, Rachel Hadley had seven digs and seven kills, Kassie Strong had one kills, Makenna Olsen had one kill and two blocks and Elvia Diaz added 12 digs for the Dust Devils.

Manogue sweeps Douglas

Bishop Manogue maintained its hold on first place in the Sierra League volleyball race Tuesday night by sweeping past Douglas 25-16, 25-21, 25-19.

Manogue (9-0, 20-5) took charge of the match by rallying to win a second set that saw the score tied on 10 occasions and four lead changes. Douglas (7-2 league, 13-5 overall) was tied for second place with Carson coming into the match.

Douglas eliminates CHS

MINDEN — Madelyn Landerfelt posted a second-round victory against Preeta Amin in a matchup of No. 1 singles players Tuesday to put the Douglas High girls tennis team on track to a 14-4 verdict over Carson in the first round of the Northern Division I Region Tournament.

Landerfelt outlasted Amin 6-2 in a meeting between two of the North’s top five singles players on the Douglas courts.

Landerfelt won her other set 6-0 to help stake Douglas to leads of 4-2 after one round and 10-2 after the second round.

By winning, Douglas (11-1) advances to the semifinals of the region team tournament and a home match on Thursday against Galena, a 13-5 winner over McQueen on Tuesday. Douglas and Galena are the tournament’s No. 2 and 3 seeds.

Amin collected one of Carson’s two points in the opening round when she bested the Tigers’ Maggie Rich, 6-1. Amanda Breen and Emma Breeding accounted for Carson’s other win in doubles by a 6-4 score over Chandler Howe and Kari Coziahr.

Kayleigh Carlson and Anne Pomeroy posted wins in the first two rounds, including a 6-2 verdict over Breen and Breeding in the second round.

The Carson team of Abbey Dudley and Amanda Schultz won their third-round set in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-5).

BOYS TENNIS

Spanish Springs 10, Carson 9

No. 4 seeded CHS sustained a heartbreaking loss in a tiebreaker in the first round of the playoffs at Carson. The Senators were able to win just one of six tiebreakers, losing two by 5-7 scores and another 7-9.

Taylor Saarem won his tiebreaker 7-1. Jake Jones lost his tiebreaker 5-7, Tyler Warren lost 5-7 and Kyle Kunz and Aaron Woodbury lost 7-9 in doubles.

The match was tied 3-3 after the first round as Saarem won 6-2 in singles and Kunz and Woodbury won 6-1, and Nico Salas and Jayson Artz won 6-4 in doubles. Carson led 7-5 going into the third round after Jones won 6-0 and Saarem won 7-5 in singles and Kunz and Woodbury won 6-1 and Jared Hearn and Trevor Sollberger won 6-1 in doubles.

Jones pulled out a 7-6 (7-3) win in the third round and Kunz and Woodbury also won 6-2.

But Spanish Springs won the other four matches to force the tiebreaker with the closest Carson coming to clinching the match coming in a 4-6 loss for Warren.

Carson girls finish fourth

Carson High’s squad took fourth in the weekly Sierra League tournament Monday at Eagle Valley-East.

Manogue won with 328 followed by Galena at 360, Douglas 369, Carson 389, Wooster 399 and Damonte 427.

“There was some great scoring by Carson players,” CHS coach Rod Butler said. “We still finished fourth but we had more personal best scores. We have players that are really improving.”

Taylor Krupp led Carson with a season-best 86. Bethany Kniffen shot a season-best 99 and Camryn Aten finished with a 101, a career best. Angelika Liwag (103), Sara Dale (110) and Elise McLaren (121) all had their best rounds of the season.

South Tahoe blanks Dayton

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Vikings scored three times in the opening eight minutes and didn’t look back on the way to a seventh straight shutout victory in league play, 11-0.

Dayton (1-10, 0-9) trailed 6-0 at halftime. Seven different players scored for South Tahoe (11-2-1, 8-0-1 I-A Northern) in the victory, led by a hat trick from forward Jordyn Dion.

South Tahoe rolls past Dayton

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Dayton’s boys team lost to South Tahoe 6-0. The Vikings scored five goals in the first half — including two from forward Mauro Aguayo — en route to their second shutout win in as many games.

Dayton (0-11, 0-9) didn’t record a shot in either half of the loss, while the Vikings finished with 38. South Tahoe (5-4-1, 5-3-1) opened the scoring eight minutes into the match, the first of three goals in an 11-minute span.

In net for Dayton, goalkeeper Gabriel Dums stopped eight of South Tahoe’s 14 shots on goal in 68 minutes of action.

He sat out the last 12 minutes of the first half after landing hard on a corner kick, and returned after halftime to only allow one goal.
