NV150 eventsbegin to takefinal shape

The Mayor’s NV 150 Commission held its final meeting on Wednesday before the community celebrates the state’s sesquicentennial on Oct. 31 at the Churchill County Museum in the afternoon and later that night at Venturacci Park.

The commission also announced a special event takes place this morning in downtown Fallon. White Pine, Eureka, and Lander counties put together Nevada 150 proclamations to be delivered to the state offices in Carson City later today.

Churchill County is joining the other counties and will issue its own proclamation with a ceremony at 8 a.m. on the courthouse steps on the corner of Williams Avenue and Maine Street.

The main NV 150 events are in their final stages of completion, said Frank Woodliff III, who has been working on the time capsule and Then and Now projects.

Woodliff said items have been submitted, and once the Churchill County Museum Association’ selects the items for the capsule, they will be lowered into a vault on Oct. 31 at the southeast corner of the museum. In the meantime, the museum will display the items until Oct. 31, and those items not selected will be on display afterward.

Woodliff and Kimi Melendy, curriculum director for the Churchill School District, said they received 28 entries for the Then and Now project, most of those coming from second and third grades. Woodliff said three other items came from the sixth grade at the middle school, first grade at Numa and the photo class at the high school.

After cake cutting and several book signings, the celebration shifts to Venturacci Park that evening for a square dance exhibit from the Oasis Squares followed by music and dancing.
