A former Lyon County deputy sheriff has been charged with six felonies and three misdemeanors following an investigation by the state Division of Investigations.

Jerry Peek, who was fired following an internal investigation, is being held in the Washoe County Jail in lieu of a total of $750,000 bail.

He’s charged with coercion, asking or receiving a bribe, sex with a prisoner, preventing or dissuading a victim from reporting a crime, misconduct by a public officer, open and gross lewdness, indecent exposure and inhumanity to a prisoner.

A spokesman for the sheriff’s office said the case brought changes in policies and practices to ensure “nothing like this happens again.”

“Unfortunately, these types of crimes occur across the country and are a glemish and embarrassment to all of law enforcement,” the department said in a statement pointing out the vast majority of law enforcement officers are professional upstanding men and women.

The statement thanked the victims for the courage to come forward and assured the public they will do what’s right no matter who’s involved.

No court date has yet been set for Peek.
