Pitched battle in Chinatown — one killed and two badly wounded. The regular monthly social took place in Chinatown this afternoon. At the commencement the “racket” nothing serious was thought, as the day before was of general noise, feasting, etc., over the dead, and was looked upon on our side of town to be a continuation of the outlandish ceremonies, but when 20 shots were fired and the general commotion observed among the celebrants, a stampede for the battle-ground was at once set on foot and within minutes about two hundred spectators were on the ground. Wayside notes. The safe robbers at Reno are supposed to be practicing to run for the Legislature (Last Wednesday evening safe crackers tapped the safe at the Silver Star Mill at Reno, and got about $400. There is no trace of the thieves.)

100 years ago

Fire has been discovered in old stope at the 2,500 level of the Mexican mine in Virginia City. The men in charge of the situation say it is well in hand and the fire is being confined to that level. Bulkheads have been constructed in drifts connecting the Union, Sierra Nevada, Ophir and Con. Virginia mines. At this time there is no danger to the pumping plants.

Mrs. W.W. Robbins, wife of Dr. W.W. Robbins, district governor of Rotary International, was entertained by the women of the Rotary with a dinner given at the Senator, and then following at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oliver.

Layman’s Day will be observed Sunday at the Presbyterian Church with six members participating. Juliette Vance and Al Saliman will sing a duet of their own arrangement, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul.”
