‘Easy Rider’ screens tonight at Art Center

Road Chronicles I, the Churchill Arts Council’s fall film series, will conclude tonight with a screening of the classic 1969 film, “Easy Rider.”

The film stars Dennis Hopper (who also directed the movie), Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson, who received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and the film was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay. It was nominated for the grand prize, the Palme d’Or, at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and, while it did not win, the movie won Best Film by a New Director.

It is the story of two counter culture bikers who set out on a road trip from L.A. to New Orleans in search of America. Along the way, they encounter a variety of people and experiences — hippies, rednecks and others — from a troubled time in this country.

The film was also acclaimed for its soundtrack which included songs by The Band, Steppenwolf, the Byrds, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan.

Tickets — $7 for CAC members, $10 for nonmembers — will be available in the Center’s Art Bar beginning at 6 p.m. and the film will begin at 7 p.m. For information, call Churchill Arts at 775-423-1440.

There are several events scheduled for Oct. 31 in celebration of the state of Nevada’s sesquicentennial birthday.

Events at the Churchill County museum include from 4 to 6 p.m., the burial of a time capsule, a Then and Now exhibit, the cutting of a 150th birthday cake and the official release of, and book signing for, “Fallon,” an annotated photographic essay on the history of the city edited by Michon Mackedon and Valerie J. Serpa.

From 7-9:30 p.m. at the Venturacci Gym there will be a square dance performance by the Oasis Squares, another cake cutting and a fireman’s dance with the Carson River Band.
