Record of service: Partner, family-owned Charley’s Grilled Subs: Experienced at opening a business in Carson City and dealing with all the regulations and requirements; State Government: Began as a student for the Department of Taxation and retired as Deputy Director for the Department of Corrections; Successfully solving accounting and financial challenges, always keeping the taxpayers’ interest in mind; Nevada Association of Counties; Represented the agency at the Legislature and worked towards successful passage of legislation; Civic: Redevelopment Advisory Citizens Committee – Chairman (Jan. 2012-current); County (Carson City) Board of Equalization, Vice Chairman (Jan. 2012 - current); Carson City Chamber of Commerce – Board of Directors (July 2011 – Jan. 2014); Friends in Service Helping (FISH) Board of Directors – Chairman (July 2011 - current); Friends of the Library – Member.

Honors: Certificate of Appreciation from Director of DMV (January 1996); “The point of taxation for special fuel changed from the retail/dealer level to the supplier level. This required a new program to be established in a six month time frame. You effectively devised all relevant forms, developed regulations, conducted public hearings, and assisted in the development of the computer program. You also conducted extensive training for the motor carrier industry as well as employees. This was an enormous undertaking and has resulted in a successful program.”

Platform: Carson City is my hometown. My brother, sister and I grew up here. I love it. While Carson needs to grow, I want to ensure it retains its friendliness, its concern for senior citizens as much as for children and a return to an average cost of living. Its future and quality of life are as important to me as they are to you. Ensure that fees and taxes are lowered as their initial needs are satisfied, instead of coming up with new projects on which to spend the money, by working with the other members of the Board of Supervisors. Plan for future maintenance needs by seeking strategic budget cuts and holding public hearings for public suggestions. There are always the unexpected “act of God” disasters (like the recent floods). Placing money in an emergency savings account (rainy day fund) should be a priority. We must ensure that Carson City makes it easy to do business here, and doesn’t present unnecessary barriers to new or expanding companies. John McKenna

Residence: Carson City

Record of service: Carson City Supervisor Ward 3 2011 – Current; Carson City School Trustee 1993 - 2008; US Army 1965 – 1968.

Education: Southern Colorado State College (University of Southern Colorado) BS, Accounting, 1972; 40 hours of Professional Business Education every year for 30 plus years; US Army NCO Academy – Drill Instructors School, 1967.

Honors: Certified Public Accountant certification 1980; Purple Heart for wounds received as the result of hostile enemy actions; Combat Infantryman Badge – A recipient must be personally present and under hostile fire while serving in an assigned infantry or Special Forces primary duty, in a unit actively engaged in ground combat with the enemy; other – recognition of Vietnam service.

Platform: As a Carson City Supervisor I plan to continue to use my extensive financial experience and knowledge to make sound economic decisions for Carson City. When I was elected at the height of the recession, Carson City was in poor financial shape. Over the last 3 1/2 years I have worked with the citizens of Carson City, city staff and the other supervisors to successfully restore financial reserves, meet basic maintenance needs and build a strong city leadership team. In my next term I plan to continue to work to keep government small, business friendly and to increase financial reserves while at the same time make smart spending decisions on projects that will help the city move into the future. I also will work on fixing our infrastructure and make Carson City a great place to live and do business.
