In two months, voters will cast their ballots for local, state and national candidates.
The months leading up to any general election in Nevada seem long because of the period between voting in the June primaries to the general election. For most of the summer, candidates have slid under the radar.
Locally, the time between June and now has produced very little interest in the local elections, but we expect that to change in the next month.
One thing is for certain, however. The time between elections is too long and causes the public to tune out the various races although the national races for U.S. Senate control will affect just about everyone..
Statewide, Gov. Brian Sandoval will be a shoe-in for his second term. Not even Sen. Harry Reid can support his Democrat opponent; however, Reid is pushing the Democrat base to support Lucy Flores for lieutenant governor against State Sen. Mark Hutchison.
The only other constitutional race drawing much attention is for attorney general between Ross Miller and Adam Laxalt … and Ron Knecht, who represents Churchill County as a regent in the University of Nevada system, is gearing up for a intense fight for controller.
Congressman Mark Amodei is seeking his second term as the Congressional District 2 representative.
Locally, the two races generating interest are for sheriff and recorder.
LVN Candidates Night is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Fallon Convention Center and will feature other local races for the Churchill County School Board and the Mosquito, Vector and Weed Abatement Board. An invitation will be extended to those who are running unopposed, so that they can talk to the voters and thank them for their support.
The LVN Candidates Night will give the public a good look at those running for local office and to candidates discuss their views and reasons for seeking office. This forum is being conducted three days before early voting begins.
Although attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions, we would also like to solicit questions from the general public prior to the LVN Candidates Night so that they may be more specific to the office. Questions can be e-mailed to news@lahontanvalleynews.com. In the subject line, write “Questions.”
Our readers will be able to send letters to the editor. The last day election-related letters will be considered prior to the general election is Oct. 29. The last day they will be published is Oct. 31. Letter writers will be allowed one election-related letter every 15 days.
Candidates or their family members will not be able to promote themselves or the candidate with a letter to the editor or on the LVN website.
Editorials are written by the LVN_ Editorial Board and appear on Wednesdays.
