Prep/Community Roundup: Carson boys tennis edges Damonte

RENO — Carson improved to 2-0 with a 10-9 win over Damonte Ranch in a Northern Division I boys tennis match Tuesday afternoon.

The match was tied at 9 after regulation, and Carson won the tiebreaker 4-2. All three doubles team won their tie-breakers as did Taylor Saarem.

The doubles tandem of Kyle Kunz and Aaron Woodbury went 3-0. The duo dropped just four games in three sets. Trevor Sollberger and Jared Hearn went 2-1 in doubles as did Zach Simms and Stuart McElhany.

Carson managed just two points in singles, one each from Jake Jones and Saarem.

Damonte girls hold off

Carson netters, 11-7

Despite the dominance of Preeta Amin, the Carson High girls dropped an 11-7 decision to Damonte Ranch Tuesday afternoon at Carson.

The loss dropped Carson to 1-1.

Amin won 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2. Anya Woodbury went 2-1, winning her last two sets by identical 6-1 scores.

Shaylin Segura went 1-2 at No. 3 singles and the doubles team of Anna Glenn and Abbey Dudley also went 1-2.

Yerington sweeps Fallon

in 1A volleyball

FALLON — Kassidy Lommori contributed 16 kills, four aces and six digs to lead Yerington to a 25-17, 25-12 and 25-8 win over Fallon Tuesday afternoon.

Setter Ashley Rife added eight digs, four kills and 25 assists with Chloe Dane contributing eight kills, seven digs and three aces. Brianna Ramirez had seven digs and two kills.

Yerington is 7-1 on the season.

Carson golfers struggle

in opening tournament

Carson’s girls golf team struggled to a fifth-place finish Tuesday afternoon in the opening Sierra League tournament of the season.

Bishop Manogue, led by Jax Sohl’s 77, won with a 336. Galena was second at 407, Wooster 414, Douglas 432 and Carson 452.

“Well the first match is over and the players found it difficult,” said CHS coach Rod Butler. “It gave me a clear understanding of where we are and where we need to go. Each player has areas to improve and we will be working on them in weeks to come.”

Taylor Krupp led Carson with a 91, and she was seventh overall. Bethany Kniffen shot 100, while Camryn Aten shot 124, Angelika Liway 137, Juliet Favero 139 and Elise McLaren 159.

Schellins, Weises team

up for T. Canyon win

Mike and Donna Schellin and Bob and Cathy Weise carded a 100 to win the Thunder Canyon Labor Day Variable Best Ball Tournament on Labor Day.

Larry and Claudia Goodnight and Glenn and Denice Tsuda shot 110 for second place and Andrew Sels, Josh Bollaert, Robert Tinnin and John Healey were at 112. Bob and Sandi Oglesby and Leland and Karon Sullivan finished fourth at 113.

• Mike Bennert and Bob Pike shot 122 to win the Ned Eyre Senior Invitational on Aug. 27-28. The duo improved by 23 shots. Fran Menante and Steve Churchfield were second at 123, an improvement of 18 shots. Bob Oglesby and Tony Kane shot 124, an improvement of 21 shots. Dave Westfall and Dave Hansen were fourth at 124, an improvement of 24 shots.

Kiwanis sponsor Cancer

Awareness golf tourney

The Carson City Kiwanis are sponsoring a Pancreatic Cancer Awareness tournament Sept. 20 at 9 a.m. at Empire Ranch Golf Course. The entry fee is $75 per person.

There will be a men’s, women’s and mixed as well as senior men, senior women and senior mixed. The senior divisions are for golfers over 55. Golfers can buy tape and mulligans.

Golf isn’t the only thing on the agenda, however. Between 7 and 9 a,m. there is a bench press competition for men and women, and at 8 a.m. there is a 5K walk and run. The cost for the walk/run is $30 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. The cost for the weightlifting is $10. To register, go to Active.com. Entry forms are also available at Empire Ranch.

Spencer, Johnson tie

at Silver Oak event

Chuck Spencer and Kevin Johnson shot a net 67 to win Flight 1 at the Silver Oak Men’s Club Monthly Masters on Aug. 31.

James Shabi was third with a 69, while John Owens was fourth with a 70.

In Flight 2, Jeff Cloutier won with a 63, while Bill Fraser was next at 65 and Ryan Balik was third with a 66. Clark Balik and Freeman Johnson tied for fourth with a 69.

• The social for women at Silver Oak continues through Oct. 3. Local players have the opportunity to learn the rules of golf and golf technique from James Potter, assistant golf pro at Silver Oak. Shabi and Lepire

team up for win

Jim Shabi and Ivan Lepire won via tiebreaker over Mike Logue and Bob Pluth at last Wednesday’s Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club 2-man best ball tourney.

Both teams shot 56 in the A flight. Shabi aced No. 3 on the Red course.

Bill Milligan and Gene Gaston were third with a 58, while Bob Blom and John Masiello were fourth with a 59.

Joe O’Brien and Robey Willis won the B flight with a 53. Rich Bremenour and Frank Romano were second over Mike Rogers and Greg Bentley in a tiebreaker. Both teams shot 60. Fred Blackburn and Cleve Dalen also shot 60 and finished fourth.

Thompson, Householder, Mason

win at Carson Valley GC

Bill Thompson, Chuck Householder and Jim Mason won their respective flights in the first round of the President’s Cup at Carson Valley Golf Club on Aug. 31.

The format was a Modified Stableford.

Thompson had 39 In Flight A, 19 points ahead of Roger Hala. Householder had 8 points, one ahead of David Morris and John Pearson. Mason had 22 points, four ahead of Gerry Bing.
