Galvan sparks CHS boys to win

RENO — Ryan Galvan was one of Carson High’s go-to players a year ago, and he’s picking up where he left off.

Galvan produced an assist on the game-tying goal and scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute to lead the Senators to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Reno Saturday afternoon at Reno High School.

Reno had taken a 3-2 lead when John Shaffer scored on a direct free kick from about 40 yards out in the 52nd minute. The Carson goalkeeper, for some unexplained reason, kept backpedaling and instead of punching the ball over the crossbar tried to catch it and was unable to come up with the ball.

That’s when Galvan came up with a couple of big plays.

In the 62nd minute, Galvan came up with a loose ball. The Reno keeper came up, and Galvan chipped it to Rogelio Herrera who scored easily to tie the match at 3. Four minutes later, Galvan gave Carson a 4-3 lead with what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

“The goalie came way out (on the first one),” Galvan said. “I saw an opening and played the ball to him because he was in better position. On the goal, I knew I had to fight for (and get) the ball.”

“Those plays were pure heart,” Carson first-year coach Mike Alvarez said. “I knew he was exhausted. He showed his will and determination on that one.”

It was an up and down effort for the Senators, who gave up a quick goal three minutes into the contest and two in a seven-minute stretch in the second half.

“I was very pleased with our passing and communication on offense,” Alvarez said. ‘We were a little nervous (early) and it showed.”

After Chance Callister scored at the 3-minute mark when Brian Llamas failed to clear a ball out of his own end, Carson scored two goals over the next 19 minutes.

The tying goal came when Christian Martinez pounded one toward the far post from about 30 yards. The ball struck the left post and went into the net. In the 22nd minute, Alejandro Gonzales faked out the Reno goalie and calmly scored to give the Senators a 2-1 lead.

Reno attacked Carson with a passion in the first 12 minutes of the first half, as Callister scored off his own miss and then came back on the long distance free kick to make it 3-2.

“They (Reno) improved offensively in the second half,” Alvarez said. “We weren’t communicating well between the back line and the goalies. We need to do a better job in that area.”

In the boys JV game, Osvaldo Gomez scored Carson’s only goal in a 2-1 loss.

GIRLS

Carson 2, Reno 0

Melissa Glanzmann and Chantal Torres scored a goal apiece to lead the Senators to a dominating win over the Huskies, whose best chance for a score was wiped out because of an offsides call.

Kim Reyes recorded the shutout, collecting three saves. The back wall which included Bailie Zuber, Lindy Lehman, Galilea Cid, Sierra Scroggins and Lindsey Hettrick turned in a nice performance.

“I’m happy with the way our team played today,” coach Greg Lehman said. “We wanted to get into a rhythm today. Reno has a couple of key players (Ellie and Emelie Small) who are very dangerous and I thought we did a good job against them. Kim (Reyes) has come a long ways since we started practicing. She gets better every day.”

Glanzmann scored in the 17th minute to give Carson a 1-0 lead. By the time the half ended, Carson outshot Reno,12-2, and Glanzmann had four other good scoring oportuniities.

“We had some quality opportunities in the first half,” Lehman said. “We could have had a bigger lead, but we just weren’t able to finish.”

Reno missed a good scoring opportunity in the 43rd minute and then Torres blasted one the Reno goalie deflected and it went off the left upright in the 45th minute. Nothing much happened over the next 30 minutes of playing time until Torres scored in the 74th minute to make it 2-0.

Reno scored, but it was waved off because of the offsides.
