FYC numbers up, dinner on horizon

I would like to take this opportunity to update the community on the success of the summer programs operated by the Fallon Youth Club and invite everyone to come out and support the club at our annual dinner/auction fundraiser on Sept. 20.

This summer, the club’s lunch program was once again a big hit with our area’s hungry children. The club’s dedicated staff, along with the tireless support of Banner Churchill Community Hospital, handed out lunches all summer at Oats Park, Laura Mills Park, Sunridge Quarters, Churchill Villages and Broadway Park. I am happy to report the club fed more than 6,750 lunches to children in need of a nutritious meal under this program.

I am also excited to report the club’s new summer dinner program was overwhelmingly successful and took a giant step forward in addressing a growing need in our community. Under this new program, the club was able to expand its traditional summer meal program and provide 1,940 fresh, hot dinners to attendees of the club. Again, BCCH should be thanked for donating their time and effort to make this program a reality.

In addition to the successful continuation and expansion of the summer food service programs, I would like the community to know that the club’s average summer attendance increased significantly from the previous year. An average of 74 children showed up daily to take advantage of the club’s summer educational programs and recreational activities.

These success stories support one common theme: the club is reaching out to, and positively affecting, more local children each and every day. In order to ensure that the club can continue on its mission to extend crucial services to those in need, individuals like yourself must embrace our mission and pledge adequate financial resources to meet the rising demand.

There is no easier way to pledge your support for the club than attending the annual dinner fundraiser on Sept. 20, at the Slanted Porch Restaurant. The event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and will, as always, provide great food, fun and social interaction. In addition, attendees have a chance to bring home one of our unique auction items the event has become known for offering.

If interested in purchasing tickets to the dinner or donating an auction item to the cause, contact the club at 775-423-6926 or visit the website at www.fallonyouthclub.com. If you are unable to attend or donate, contact us to discuss one of the many ways you can support our efforts. Remember, each dollar raised for the club stays right here in this community.

I believe this community should take great pride in the growing success of the Fallon Youth Club and I thank you for your ongoing support.

Lem Mackedon is the president of the Fallon Youth Club.
