Education Achievements: Dayton student honored for excellence

Caitlin Williams, a student at Dayton Intermediate School, was recognized as a student of excellence by the United States Achievement Academy and was named to the honor roll.

The academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Students who receive the honor are recognized upon the recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other sponsors. Standards to earn the award include academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation, attitude, cooperative spirit and dependability.

Williams is the daughter of Mike and Amanda Williams of Dayton and the granddaughter of Chuck and Barbara Williams of Dayton and Mike and Robin Roach of Carson City. She was nominated for this honor by her counselor and will appear in the United States Achievement Academy’s official yearbooks, which is published nationally.

Awards available for female students

Women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families and seek financial assistance to continue their education or receive training can apply for the Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women, formerly known as the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards.

The Live Your Dream Award is used to offset costs associated with efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training, including tuition, books, childcare, carfare or any other education-related expense.

Soroptimist International of Smith Valley will provide a $1,000 cash grant to its award recipient, who will then advance to the Soroptimist Sierra Nevada Region level, where recipients could receive up to an additional $5,000. The program culminates with three finalist awards for $10,000.

Minden man graduates from Wheaton College
