Prep roundup: Tucker’s serving sparks Carson

It wasn’t pretty, but it was a victory.

Carson High was dominant in the opening game, and then slept through the next two en route to a 25-3, 25-12 and 25-12 victory over Hug Thursday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson improved to 3-1, and will host North Valleys Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“I’m glad we got the win, but I was disappointed with the intensity we showed the last couple of games,” Carson coach Robert Maw said.

The Senators haven’t shown the ability to stomp on teams once they have them down. At times, the Senators played down to Hug’s level.

Kills by Natalie Anderson and Juliana Anderson plus back-to-back aces by Jaycie Roberts snapped a 2-all tie and gave the Senators an 8-2 lead. Hug scored on a hitting error by Kylie Riske to make it 8-3, but that’s the last point the Hawks would get.

Libero Makenzie Tucker served up 17 straight points, including four aces. Juliana Anderson chipped in a couple of kills as did Maddie Jergensen.

“Makenzie is a great server,” Maw said. “She can usually put it real close to where I want it. She can change pace on her serves which keeps them off balance.”

Carson then went into sleep mode.

In the second set, Hug closed to 8-6 only to see CHS score 11 of the next 14 points for a 19-9 lead. Juliana Anderson and Keelin Pilgrim had two kills each in the surge while Roberts added a kill. The rest of the points came off Hug ball handling and hitting errors. Roberts added two more kills, as Carson scored six of the last seven points of the set to win handily.

In the final set, Carson bolted to an early 9-2 lead, mostly due to Hug mistakes. Roberts did serve up an ace in that stretch. The lead stayed at seven points until two more aces by Tucker and a Roberts kill made it 19-8. Hug closed to 20-11 with an ace off the net, but kills by Maya Vasquez, Juliana Anderson and an ace by Allison Kibbe closed out the match after 70 minutes.

Roberts finished with nine kills and four digs, while Juliana Anderson added eight kills and two blocks. Natalie Anderson had 27 assists. Jergensen and Vasquez had three kills each.

VC tops Portola

Virginia City knocked off Portola 25-9, 25-14 and 25-22 Thursday night in a nonconference match.

Niki D’Agostino had 10 kills, eight blocks and eight digs, while Nicole Huffman added 15 assists, two digs, two kills and two aces. Gwyn Landaburu and Bethany Fuller contributed five kills apiece. Fuller added five digs and Landaburu added seven.

TENNIS

CHS girls 16, Hug 2

Carson evened its record to 3-3. In singles, Anya Woodbury won 6-0, Nancy Henricksen won 6-0, Anna Glenn won 6-0, Katie Jones won 6-4 and Amanda Schulz won 6-4 for the Senators. In doubles for CHS, Elise Brady and Emily McCaskill won 6-4, Schulz and McCaskill played well in a 5-7 loss and Brady and Camilla Antonucci played well in a 5-7 loss.

Carson’s scheduled match at Reed on Tuesday, which was postponed due to poor air quality as a result of the King Fire, has been rescheduled for Monday.

CHS boys 15, Hug 3

The Senators improved to 6-1 with an easy victory over the Hawks.

Six points came from walkovers, as Hug didn’t field a complete team.

Carson used mostly reserves in the easy win.

Tyler Warren, Ryan Tomita, Nick Rosen, Henry Sturm and Brett Pettersen posted wins in singles.

Nico Salm and Jayson Artz, Zach Simms and Stuart McElhany, and Alek Henricksen and Scott Coolbaugh all won in doubles.

JV game stopped in 3rd quarter

Carson was ahead 21-0 early in the third quarter when the game was stopped because of poor air quality.

Bob Bateman, Carson athletic director, said there would be an effort to try and have the teams meet later this season.

Varsity game still on ...for now

Tonight’s Carson-Spanish Springs game is still on despite poor air quality on Thursday.

Bateman said school officials were going to huddle this morning and start making calls to see if Lovelock or Fernley could host games either tonight or Saturday.

Bateman said worst-case scenario, depending on what the weather people say, the game would stay at Carson and be moved to Saturday.

Spanish Springs 19, Carson freshmen 12

Abel Carter scored on two short runs, as Carson dropped a close decision to the Cougars.

The Senators failed to convert either of their extra points because kicker Damian Wallace was injured.

Spanish Springs did a good job of controlling the ball according to coach Billy McHenry, eating up 10 minutes of clock time on one of its drives.
