Events set at Sierra Place

Sierra Place, 1111 W. College Parkway, is holding free events this month.

Author and historian Robert A. Nylen will present “Touring Nevada’s Highway 50” at 10 a.m. Sept. 22.

Nylen is curator of history at the Nevada State Museum.

He has taken several trips along Highway 50 during his career, which he’s documented with stories, facts and photographs.

Sierra Place will also be the host for Carson City’s Ward 1 Supervisor candidates.

Karen Abowd will be featured at 2 p.m. Sept. 22, and Lisa Helget will be featured at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 24.

Event to honor orphaned pets set

Catmandu Adoption Center and Sanctuary, 1829 Brown St., is joining Remember Me Thursday, a worldwide campaign that raises awareness about the plight of orphaned pets.

The center will hold an open house from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25, when animal lovers can stop by to light a candle for pets that died waiting to be adopted.

‘Wedding from Hell’ benefits CTH Auxiliary

Proscenium Players, Inc., will present “The Wedding from Hell,” a murder mystery dinner show sponsored by Carson Tahoe Health Auxiliary, on Sept. 27 in the Nevada Room of the Governor’s Mansion.

Prizes will be awarded to audience members who guess which character is the murderer. There will also be a raffle, and no host wine, beer and soft drinks will be available.

Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $45 per person and include dinner, dessert, coffee, tea and the show. Attire is dressy casual.

Dog obedience classes start at Fuji Park

Carson City Recreation’s basic dog obedience program, instructed by Guy Yeaman, starts Sept. 30 and runs through Nov. 4. Classes meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Fuji Park, across from Costco.

The class covers basic obedience commands and addresses individual problems and behaviors. Each dog needs a training collar (choke chain, Halti, Martingale, harness, etc.) and a leash 4- to 6-feet in length. Dogs must be current on all shots through rabies; written record must be shown at the first class.

The 6-week course costs $80 per person. Register in person with Carson City Recreation at the Carson Aquatic Facility or online at www.carson.org/ccpr.

Advocate celebrates 50 years of Wilderness Act

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, legislation that protected more than 9 million acres of federal land. Marge Sill, considered by some to be the mother of Nevada wilderness, will help the Nevada State Museum celebrate the occasion from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25.

Sill will share how Great Basin National Park and other treasures came to be protected. Sill has been part of the Sierra Club and efforts to create Lake Tahoe State Park, along with the Truckee River kayak course and other projects.

The presentation is part of the Frances Humphrey lecture series held at the museum on the fourth Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6 p.m. The program is included with regular admission, which costs $8 for adults and is free for museum members and children 17 and younger.

Event celebrates catalog of area artists

A mixer to celebrate and shed light on a new database of arts and cultural resources in Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City and Dayton will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at St. Mary’s Art & Retreat Center in Virginia City.

The catalog is the result of a project funded by the Nevada Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts. It was carried out by volunteers and offers a directory of artists, musicians, actors, writers, photographers, performance venues and more.

The following is a schedule of events happening in October at Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St.

Patrick Betson, Jackie Boor, Guy Nixon Redcorn, and Stan Paher, authors of books with Nevada subjects, will be available to meet at a book signing event from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 in the museum’s Dema Guinn Concourse.

An event about bats will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 as part of the museum’s Family Fun Saturday series.

Fremont’s Lost and Found will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Parade of privies returns in annual outhouse races

Teams of costumed outhouse racers return to Virginia City Oct. 4-5 for the 25th Annual World Championship Outhouse Races.

The parade begins at noon on Oct. 4 with races following in heats taking place every 30 minutes. The races continue at noon the following day, Oct. 5, with the crowning of the champion team.

The double elimination tournament accepts three person teams, which compete for cash and trophies. One rider takes the throne and the remaining team members push, pull or drag the decorated outhouse down C Street and across the toilet paper finish line. Toilets must be functioning, but not used.

Annual Cancer Sucks 5K planned Oct. 4

The 6th annual Cancer Sucks 5K for Carson Tahoe Health Foundation’s support of area cancer patients will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at 300 S. Curry St. Early check-in will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the same location.

Participants are invited to dress up, form a team or participate as individuals.

The cost is $30 per person; $25 for those on teams of eight or more and $20 for ages 17 and under.

Annual seminar emphasizes wellness for seniors

“Sharing Positivity” is the theme of this year’s TRIAD Senior Education Seminar, which will have an emphasis on wellness and safety for seniors, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Travis Lee, Douglas County Community Services division manager, will preside over the seminar. Presentations include: Active Shooter: Run, Hide Fight by Sheriff Ron Pierini; Fall Prevention — A Community Approach by Deputy Fire Chief Dave Fogerson; Recognizing Mental Health Issues in Seniors by Frank Jacobelli; Violence and Mental Disorders by Joseph McEllistrem; Aging, Alzheimer’s and Safety by Peter Reed; Creative Techniques & Wellness by Lynette Schweigert; and Round Up by Leo Kruger.

The free seminar is designed for medical and health care professionals, social workers, MFT, emergency workers and seniors. Continuing education units are available. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Airstream club holds camping rally

The Sierra Nevada Unit of the WBCCI Airstream Owners Club will host a camping rally from noon Thursday, Sept. 25, to noon Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Crocker NSF campground near Beckwourth, Calif., off of Highway 70.

The cost is $5 per night, which benefits the Sierra Nevada Unit. Guests of members as well as all current and potential Airstream owners are welcome to attend.

Volunteers sought for AARP Tax-Aide program

AARP is looking for volunteers to help with its annual Tax-Aide program.

The program offers the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service and, while it gives special attention to seniors, a spokesman said anyone can get help from Tax-Aide.

To put on the service, AARP Nevada Director Carloa Sloan said it needs volunteers willing to help others through tax season.

Last year, she said 260 volunteers helped more than 12,700 Nevadans file their annual returns.
