Airstream club holds camping rally

The Sierra Nevada Unit of the WBCCI Airstream Owners Club will host a camping rally from noon Thursday, Sept. 25, to noon Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Crocker NSF campground near Beckwourth, Calif., off of Highway 70.

The cost is $5 per night, which benefits the Sierra Nevada Unit. Guests of members as well as all current and potential Airstream owners are welcome to attend.

Golf tournament benefits CHS culinary teams

The fifth annual Chairman’s Scramble Golf Tournament, which benefits Carson High School’s Skills USA and ProStart culinary teams, begins with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Silver Oak Golf Course, 1251 Country Club Drive.

Carson City Toyota Scion is offering a hole-in-one prize of $10,000. The format is scramble with four-person teams. If an individual does not have a team, hew or she will be placed with other golfers.

The cost is $95 per player and includes drive range token, green fees, cart, appetizers, no host cocktail reception, awards and dinner. Hole sponsorships are also available for $150.

Check-in is at noon. A silent auction starts at 12:30 p.m., followed by a cocktail reception and awards from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and a barbecue dinner by John Hurzel and the Carson High School culinary team from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Volunteers sought for BLM’s Adopt-a-Space program

The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District, Sierra Front Field Office has launched the Adopt-a-Space program to address illegal dumping on public lands. A workshop about the new program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City District Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road.

Volunteers, including individuals, groups, schools and businesses, are needed to help. RSVPs for the open house are requested.

Charley’s Grilled Subs helps Boys & Girls Clubs

Charley’s Grilled Subs is a Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada spotlight business of the month, and it’s collecting donations for the club through the rest of the month.

The fundraiser is part of the It Just Takes One campaign, which has been developed to help the clubs across the nation meet their goals in educating, caring, and providing a safe and rewarding environment for youth.

The donations help defray the costs of tuition for families who cannot afford to pay. No child is ever turned away due to inability to pay.

Volunteers sought for AARP Tax-Aide program

AARP is looking for volunteers to help with its annual Tax-Aide program.

The program offers the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service and, while it gives special attention to seniors, a spokesman said anyone can get help from Tax-Aide.

To put on the service, AARP Nevada Director Carla Sloan said it needs volunteers willing to help others through tax season.

Last year, she said 260 volunteers helped more than 12,700 Nevadans file their annual returns.

Free bullying prevention seminar Saturday

To kick off October as National Bullying Prevention Month, Carson ATA - Karate for Kids, at 3242 Research Way, is hosting a free community bullying prevention and stranger safety seminar Saturday.

The event starts at 11 a.m. with a proclamation by Carson City Supervisor Brad Bonkowski, followed by a presentation by Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The event will cover hands-on bullying prevention techniques that demonstrate this year’s national bullying prevention theme, “The end of bullying begins with me.” Attendees will also learn how to defend themselves and others from bullies, as well as protect themselves from strangers that mean them harm.

Secretary of state candidate features Oct. 1

Barbara Cegavske, candidate for secretary of state, will be featured at Douglas County Republican Women’s next meeting on Oct. 1 at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden.

The following is a schedule of events happening in October at Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St.

Patrick Betson, Jackie Boor, Guy Nixon Redcorn, and Stan Paher, authors of books with Nevada subjects, will be available to meet at a book signing event from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 in the museum’s Dema Guinn Concourse.

An event about bats will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 as part of the museum’s Family Fun Saturday series.

Fremont’s Lost and Found will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Parade of privies returns in annual outhouse races

Teams of costumed outhouse racers return to Virginia City Oct. 4-5 for the 25th Annual World Championship Outhouse Races.

The parade begins at noon on Oct. 4 with races following in heats taking place every 30 minutes. The races continue at noon the following day, Oct. 5, with the crowning of the champion team.

The double elimination tournament accepts three person teams, which compete for cash and trophies. One rider takes the throne and the remaining team members push, pull or drag the decorated outhouse down C Street and across the toilet paper finish line. Toilets must be functioning, but not used.

Planes, pilots & flights featured at annual fly-in

Antique aircraft and modern military and fire-fighting planes will be showcased at the 17th annual Lyon County Fly-In from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4-5 at the Silver Springs Airport.

The event offers the Young Eagles First Flight program, where youth ages 8 through 17 can fly for free with a general aviation pilot. The Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 1073 Truckee, provides the pilots, who volunteer their time, planes and expertise. There will be a pancake breakfast, which is free for pilots who fly in, from 7 to 10 a.m. each day, as well as displays of antique cars, a potluck dinner, line dancing, karaoke, and entertainment by Joseph Greco and Jamie Corbet.

Admission each day costs $5 per car. The rate for buses is $2 per person.

Annual Cancer Sucks 5K planned Oct. 4

The 6th annual Cancer Sucks 5K for Carson Tahoe Health Foundation’s support of area cancer patients will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at 300 S. Curry St. Early check-in will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the same location.

Participants are invited to dress up, form a team or participate as individuals.

The cost is $30 per person; $25 for those on teams of eight or more and $20 for ages 17 and under.

Melissa Blosser, Douglas County’s community relations coordinator and public information officer, will speak about crisis media relations management at the next Carson Area Marketing & PR Network meeting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Business Resource Innovation Center, 108 E. Proctor St.

Blosser’s presentation will cover how the Douglas County Public Information Office handled the round of flash flooding in August.

Annual seminar emphasizes wellness for seniors

“Sharing Positivity” is the theme of this year’s TRIAD Senior Education Seminar, which will have an emphasis on wellness and safety for seniors, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Travis Lee, Douglas County Community Services division manager, will preside over the seminar.
