Local sports roundup: CHS golf third in league event

Carson once again finished third at the weekly Sierra League Invitational at Eagle Valley West on Tuesday afternoon.

“It was very windy, and almost every one struggled with the high winds,” Carson coach Rod Butler said.

Manogue won the event with a 396 followed by Galena at 429, Carson at 455, Douglas 490 and Damonte Ranch 494.

Carson was led by Dalton Butler, who finished third with a 77.

“Dalton struggled to make putts on the back side as the wind got stronger,” coach Butler said. “He was still able to hit a number of greens in regulation. He was grinding out there to post a good score.”

Jake Jones shot 89 and Matt McCarthy finished with a 94. Bebop Martinez also had a 94, Lakoda Smokey shot 98 and Taylor Saarem had a 115.

Muckers off to fast start

Virginia City is off to a 3-0 start after beating Coleville, 37-1, and sweeping a doubleheader from Carlin, 16-4 and 12-0.

The Muckers have been led by Colt Hess, who has driven in 15 runs in three games.

Dayton can’t hold off Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Dayton baseball team had South Tahoe on the ropes twice in Tuesday’s Div. I-A Northern League game — and couldn’t close out the Vikings. The Dust Devils lost to the hosts 10-7 at Todd Fields Park, snapping a two-game winning streak.

Dayton (3-7 I-A Northern) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, including four straight hits against South Tahoe starter Caleb Russell as part of a one-out rally. A bases-loaded double from catcher D.J. Baker during that stretch put the Dust Devils up 3-0 — then with two outs, first baseman Trevor Burrows added to the visitors’ lead with a two-run single.

South Tahoe (9-6, 7-3) pulled even in the bottom of the second with five runs on four hits — including a pair of two-out, two-run singles — to chase Dayton starter Jaret Reed. In the next half-inning the Dust Devils jumped back in front on shortstop Dylan Baker’s first career hit — a two-run homer to left field that made it 7-5.

Dayton maintained that advantage until the fifth, when South Tahoe scored four runs to jump in front 9-7 — including the go-ahead RBI single from left fielder Logan Brewer. Trailing 10-7 in the top of the seventh, the Dust Devils had the game-tying run at the plate with two outs, but left fielder Mason Haines grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

Reed went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs in Tuesday’s defeat, and Burrows finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Reliever Marcos Saylor took the loss for the Dust Devils — the senior allowed four runs on four hits over 4.1 innings, striking out three and walking two.

“I thought our effort was good defensively and we had good approaches at the plate,” said Dayton coach Mike Burrows. “There’s a lot of positives we can take away from this one moving forward.

Now that we’ve learned how to compete, we need to take the next step in closing out games.”

Dayton no-hit by Conard

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Dayton softball team ended a seven-game scoreless streak in Tuesday’s loss at South Tahoe — but didn’t record a hit in the process. In a Div. I-A Northern League contest, the Dust Devils were no-hit by Vikings starter Kendra Conard en route to a 13-1 five-inning defeat.

Conard struck out 11 and hit her sixth home run of the season for South Tahoe (3-7 I-A Northern). Dayton (0-10) opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third — the Vikings scored three in the bottom of the third before putting up 10 in the fourth.

Carson wins Placerville event

PLACERVILLE — The Carson varsity took first and JV was third in the Cougar Coed Relays over the weekend at El Dorado High School.

On the boys side, Corey Reid ran a 1:54 800-meter split, won the high jump at 6-4 and won the 110 hurdles in 15.0. Asa Carter won the triple jump in 44-1 and was second in the long jump at 20-3 1/2. Aaron Woodbury won the pole vault at 13 feet. Greg Wallace was second in the high jump at 6-2 and third in the long jump at 20-3. Ian VanRensselaer ran a 2:02.5 split on the 3200 relay team.

On the girls side, Madison Preston high jumped 5-feet for third place and ran 17.2 in the 100 hurdles. Jesse Balkwell ean a 2:30.2 at 800 meters and Eveline Delgado ran a 2:31.8. Athena Favero ran an 18.0 in the 110 hurdles.

Carson won the co-ed shot relay with Ian Schulz, Chris Miranda and Teresa Boehmer, and the group of Schulz, Maddie Jergesen and Boehmer won the discus relay. Carson won the long jump relay with Wallace, Reid and Preston and the high jump relay with Reid, Wallace and Dajarrah Navarro. Carter, Woodbury and Preston combined talents to win the triple jump relay. Carson was third in the 110 hurdles relay and third in the 3200 relay.

Carson is at the Reed Invitational Friday and Saturday.
